CEDAR FALLS — Iowa’s youth clay target athletes turned the Iowa State Trapshooting Homegrounds into one of the state’s largest youth sports venues last week, as more than 120 teams competed in the 2026 Scholastic Clay Target Program State Trap Shooting Championship.

The championship was held June 8-14 north of Cedar Falls and drew 4,886 entries from athletes ranging from fourth grade through high school. Over the course of the week, competitors shot nearly 770,000 clay targets.

The Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program, also known as SCTP, is a youth development program built around trap, skeet and sporting clays. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources describes the program as a way to teach discipline, safety, teamwork, ethics, focus, self-discipline and confidence through clay target sports. The national SCTP program also emphasizes character, citizenship and life lessons through shooting sports.

Athletes competed in singles trap, doubles trap and handicap trap during the state championship.

The PC Eagles claimed the top Varsity Team Championship in Singles Trap. The North Scott Trap Club won the top Varsity Team Championship in Handicap. Ankeny Centennial Jaguars Shooting Sports took the top Varsity Team Championship in Doubles Trap.

Individual honors were also awarded by age group in each discipline.

The All-State team for singles trap is determined by combining each athlete’s league score with their championship event score. The High-All-Around Trap team is determined by combining scores from championship events in trap singles, doubles and handicap.
