AMES — Iowa State University will begin selling alcohol at major athletic events this year, a major policy shift that will bring beer, wine and ready-to-drink cocktails to Jack Trice Stadium this fall and Hilton Coliseum this winter.

The change was announced by Iowa State Athletics Director Jamie Pollard in a letter to Cyclone fans, where he framed the decision as part of the department’s response to rising costs and new financial pressures across college athletics.

“As many of you know, we are living in one of the most transformational periods in the history of college athletics,” Pollard wrote, saying athletic departments nationwide are facing “uncertainty and significant financial pressures from rapidly increasing costs.”

Iowa State is not alone. Major college athletics has been reshaped by name, image and likeness payments, transfer-portal spending, conference realignment and the House v. NCAA settlement, which opened the door for schools to directly share revenue with athletes. That has left athletic departments looking for new money through ticket sales, donations, sponsorships, licensing, facility rentals and other revenue streams.

At Iowa State, alcohol sales will now become part of that strategy.

Under the new policy, alcohol will be sold at Jack Trice Stadium beginning with the 2026 football season and at Hilton Coliseum beginning with the 2026-27 winter sports season.

The change also comes with new restrictions. Fans will no longer be allowed to leave and re-enter Jack Trice Stadium during games. Guests must be 21 or older to buy alcohol and must show legal identification at the time of purchase.

Sales will be limited to two alcoholic beverages per person, per transaction. Beer, wine and pre-packaged ready-to-drink cocktails will be offered.

Alcohol will be sold in the north and south expanded gate areas and on the north and south concourses. Iowa State said alcohol will not be sold at permanent concession stands on the east and west concourses in order to avoid adding congestion in those areas, though a limited number of portable locations will be available there.

Alcohol will not be allowed on the grass hillsides, including Jr. Cyclone Club areas. Iowa State also said alcohol will not be sold by vendors inside seating areas.

Sales will stop at designated times during games, such as at the end of the third quarter during football games.

Existing alcohol policies in premium and hospitality areas — including the Jack Trice Club, Sukup Endzone Club, suites, Johnny’s, Champion’s Club and other official hospitality spaces — will remain unchanged.

Pollard said Iowa State studied alcohol sales at Jack Trice Stadium and Hilton Coliseum and reviewed how peer schools have handled similar policies. He said the department believes it can offer alcohol while maintaining a safe and positive environment for fans.

A portion of net proceeds from alcohol sales will support alcohol education, student wellness programming and public safety improvements, according to the department.

Iowa State also said it will continue investing in game-day safety measures, including enhanced event staffing, continued review of venue security and technology designed to detect weapons as fans enter the stadium.

“We recognize that this decision and the associated policy changes will impact Cyclone fans differently,” Pollard wrote. “It is our hope that we can all work together to ensure a smooth rollout.”
