DEKALB, Ill. — Northern Iowa produced its strongest offensive numbers of the young season, but the Panthers remained unable to crack the scoreboard Sunday, August 23, 2026, falling 3-0 to Northern Illinois in their first road match of the year.
UNI recorded season highs with 12 shots, six shots on goal and seven corner kicks. Northern Illinois, however, controlled much of the action and peppered the Panthers with 19 shots, including 10 on goal.
The loss marked the fourth consecutive match in which Northern Iowa has been shut out. UNI entered Sunday’s road test after freshman goalkeeper Hailey Luedtke piled up 10 saves in a narrow 1-0 loss to Omaha on Thursday.
Northern Illinois seized the lead in the eighth minute when Julianna Hill converted a pass from Dahlia Rodriguez for the only goal of the opening half.
Ella Ubben and Abi Roberts generated first-half scoring attempts for the Panthers, but UNI entered halftime trailing 1-0.
The Huskies struck again almost immediately after the break. Rodriguez found the net in the 46th minute, extending Northern Illinois’ advantage to 2-0.
UNI responded by creating several of its best opportunities of the afternoon. Kylie Knief, Shaelee Franck and Torie Delgado each placed shots on goal, but Northern Illinois goalkeeper Alexandra Devory turned away every attempt.
Monica Correa effectively put the match out of reach with the Huskies’ third goal in the 71st minute.
Luedtke made seven saves in her second collegiate start. She has now recorded 17 saves across her first two appearances in goal for the Panthers.
Despite the loss, Northern Iowa established several positive season marks. In addition to its best shot, shot-on-goal and corner-kick totals of the year, UNI committed a season-low seven fouls.
Franck made the first start of her collegiate career in what was her fourth appearance for the Panthers.
The result evened the all-time series between UNI and Northern Illinois at 2-2-1. The Panthers had won the programs’ two previous meetings in 2017 and 2018.
Northern Iowa returns home Thursday, August 27, to face St. Ambrose at the UNI Soccer Field in Cedar Falls. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m., with live coverage available through ESPN+.
