CEDAR FALLS — Freshman goalkeeper Hailey Luedtke delivered an impressive 10-save performance in her collegiate debut, but Northern Iowa could not manufacture a goal as Omaha slipped past the Panthers, 1-0, on Thursday, August 20, 2026.

The loss closed out UNI’s season-opening homestand and came four days after the Panthers fell to Milwaukee, 4-0, on Senior Day in Cedar Falls.

Northern Iowa was outshot 15-4 by Omaha and finished with just one shot on goal, but the Panthers showed more offensive life as the match progressed, repeatedly pushing possession into Maverick territory during the second half.

Thursday’s contest also served as UNI’s Cancer Awareness Game.

The Panthers debuted lavender uniforms for the occasion, while players wore different colored hairbands in recognition of the fight against various forms of cancer.

Luedtke kept UNI alive throughout the afternoon.

The Panthers generated two first-half shots, with Shaelee Franck and Alli Saviano each getting an attempt away.

Omaha, meanwhile, fired six shots in the opening half, including four on goal. Luedtke stopped all four as the teams went to halftime scoreless.

The Mavericks finally broke through in the 57th minute.

Lauren Schmidt connected with Kendall Dobberstein, who finished the scoring chance with her right foot to give Omaha the 1-0 advantage.

UNI continued searching for an equalizer while finishing the match with 42 percent possession.

Kylie Knief accounted for both of Northern Iowa’s second-half shot attempts, but the Panthers could not get the ball into the Omaha net.

Luedtke continued turning away Maverick opportunities at the other end, making six additional saves after halftime and finishing the afternoon with 10.

Her performance marked the highest save total by a UNI goalkeeper this season and the most by a single Panther keeper since Caitlin Richards recorded 13 against Illinois State in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament during the 2020-21 COVID season.

It was also UNI’s highest team save total since Kennedy Buntenbach and Thordis Melsted combined for 10 saves at Milwaukee last season.

Luedtke was not the only Panther making her collegiate debut Thursday. Aly Arena and Zoe Borowicz also appeared in their first college matches against the Mavericks.

The loss dropped UNI to 3-5-3 all-time against Omaha.

Northern Iowa will now leave Cedar Falls for its first road contest of the season.

The Panthers travel to DeKalb, Illinois, to face Northern Illinois on Sunday, August 23, at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Central time. No livestream will be available for the match.
