UNI soccer falls to Milwaukee, 4-0, on Senior Day

CEDAR FALLS — The University of Northern Iowa women’s soccer team honored five seniors Sunday afternoon, but Milwaukee spoiled the celebration with a 4-0 non-conference victory at the UNI Soccer Field. CEDAR FALLS — The University of Northern Iowa women’s soccer team honored five seniors Sunday afternoon, but Milwaukee spoiled the celebration with a 4-0 non-conference victory at the UNI Soccer Field.

UNI recognized Jenna Scholz, Kailey O’Brien, Ella Ubben, Maya Anderson and Camille Landphair prior to the Aug. 16 match.

Milwaukee controlled much of the action, finishing with a 21-3 advantage in shots and a 10-1 edge in shots on goal. The visitors also held an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks and had 57 percent of the possession. UNI goalkeeper Poppy Anderson faced steady pressure throughout the afternoon and finished with a season-high six saves.

The match remained scoreless for more than 27 minutes before former UNI defender Abby O’Brien broke through for Milwaukee. O’Brien scored unassisted at the 27:32 mark to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Milwaukee added another goal at 34:41 when Taylor Richards converted a penalty kick, sending UNI into halftime trailing 2-0.

The pressure continued in the second half.

Emily Petring scored an unassisted goal at 64:03 to extend Milwaukee’s lead to 3-0. Ashlyn Derosier completed the scoring at 88:29 with another unassisted goal.

UNI’s best offensive chance came in the 74th minute when Shaelee Franck put a shot on goal, but Milwaukee goalkeeper Lauren Nidey made the save. Morgan Smith and Audrey Still accounted for UNI’s other two shot attempts.

Anderson played all 90 minutes in goal for Northern Iowa, recording six saves while allowing four goals.

The match also included several career milestones for UNI.

Landphair made the first start of her Panther career in her 16th appearance. Kailey O’Brien earned her first start at UNI after previously starting twice during three seasons at Youngstown State.

Scholz made her Northern Iowa debut Sunday after appearing in 34 combined matches during previous stops at Wisconsin-Parkside and Alabama State.

Milwaukee improved to 1-1 on the season and now holds a 3-0 advantage in the all-time series with UNI. Northern Iowa dropped to 0-2. Attendance for Sunday’s match was 235.

UNI will remain at home for its next match, hosting Omaha on Thursday, Aug. 20, in the final contest of a three-game homestand. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the UNI Soccer Field, with coverage available on ESPN+.
