OSAGE — An Osage man initially arrested on domestic-abuse, child-endangerment and drunk-driving allegations is now accused of attempted murder, a Class B felony carrying up to 25 years in prison.

Mitchell County court records show prosecutors filed a five-count trial information against 44-year-old Jacob G. Castaneda on July 30, 2026, following the alleged July 25 incident at 623 Park Street in Osage.

As NIT previously reported, Osage police originally arrested Castaneda at 3:24 a.m. July 25 after an alleged domestic assault involving a weapon. He was initially charged with two counts of child endangerment, domestic abuse assault involving the display or use of a weapon and first-offense operating while intoxicated.

The charges now pending against Castaneda are:

  • Attempted murder, a Class B felony
  • Two counts of child endangerment, both aggravated misdemeanors
  • First-offense domestic abuse assault with intent to inflict serious injury, an aggravated misdemeanor
  • First-offense operating while intoxicated, a serious misdemeanor

The attempted-murder charge and revised domestic-abuse allegation substantially raise the seriousness of the case. Publicly available court entries do not reveal the detailed allegations contained in the minutes of testimony or identify how Castaneda allegedly attempted to kill the victim.

Under Iowa law, attempted murder occurs when a person allegedly intends to cause another person’s death and takes an action expected to begin a chain of events that would result in that death.

Castaneda initially posted a $2,000 cash bond and was released July 27. After prosecutors filed the attempted-murder charge, a judge issued another warrant and set bond at $25,000 cash or surety.

Osage police arrested Castaneda again at 10:18 p.m. July 30 at 623 Park Street. The department’s arrest log says he was released at 3:24 p.m. August 1 after posting bond, while the court docket records the $25,000 surety bond as posted August 3.

The court previously entered a no-contact order in the case. Castaneda is represented by attorney Timothy Michael Duffy after the court approved the withdrawal of his original public defender.

His arraignment has been continued to 1 p.m. September 8. Prosecutors filed additional minutes of testimony August 21, but the contents are not publicly available.

A conviction for attempted murder can bring up to 25 years in prison. Iowa law generally requires someone convicted of that offense to serve at least 70 percent of the maximum sentence—17½ years—before becoming eligible for parole or work release.

No plea, adjudication or disposition has been entered. Castaneda is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
