MASON CITY – Police arrested four individuals late Thursday after they received reports of redeemable cans being stolen from a donation bin outside a Cultural Crescent grocery store.
Police told NIT that at about 11:35 PM Thursday night, a person observed a male and female steal cans from the Fareway donation bin (The Exchange Club of North Iowa maintains the can donation bin). The witness alerted police, who then located a group of people leaving the area in a vehicle and stopped the car.
The driver of the car, Scott Greely, was cited for Driving Under Suspension. One of the females in the car, Theresa Sue Pennington, had valid probation revocation arrest warrants and tried to lie about her name. Officers were able to ID her quickly and arrested her on the warrants. She was also charged with Providing False Information. A male passenger, Terry Alvin Thompson, was arrested for 3rd Degree Theft. The last female passenger, Kitty Sue Kemp, was charged with 5th Degree Theft due to only having one prior theft conviction.
The value on the stolen cans was approx $20.00. Police said the cans were recovered.
Thompson and Pennington went to jail. Greeley and Kemp were cited and released. Greeley and Pennington were not cited for the theft of cans as they were not involved in the theft or present when it occurred.
