MASON CITY — North Iowa Area Community College has broken ground on the first phase of its “Let’s Light ’Em Up” athletic facilities project, a major upgrade aimed at improving Trojan athletics while giving Mason City and North Iowa more opportunities to host games, tournaments and community events.
The college held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday at the NIACC softball field, where college leaders, student-athletes, donors, alumni and community members gathered to mark the start of the project.
The first phase includes new synthetic turf baseball and softball fields, along with upgraded soccer facilities. College leaders say the improvements will provide more reliable playing conditions, reduce weather-related disruptions and create more opportunities for NIACC teams to practice and compete on campus.
“Today’s groundbreaking is an exciting first step in bringing our vision for NIACC Athletics to life,” NIACC President Joel Pedersen said. “These new baseball and softball fields are just the beginning of what’s possible.”
Pedersen credited the NIACC Foundation and donors for helping move the project forward, saying the effort is designed to benefit student-athletes, the campus and the wider North Iowa community.
For NIACC athletics, the project could be especially meaningful for baseball and softball. Synthetic turf can help extend playable seasons in Iowa, where spring weather often creates headaches for teams trying to get games and practices in. The upgrades are also expected to help bring Trojan baseball activity back onto campus.
“This is a game changer for our baseball and softball programs at NIACC,” said Ryan Flickinger, NIACC Director of Athletics. “These new fields will allow our student-athletes to spend more time practicing and competing outdoors, extend our seasons and bring Trojan baseball back to campus.”
The project is also being framed as an economic and community asset. Flickinger said the improved fields could help Mason City host high school games, tournaments and other events that bring visitors to town and support local businesses.
“This project is about more than NIACC Athletics,” Flickinger said.
Future phases could bring even more changes. As fundraising continues, NIACC plans to add lights to the baseball and softball fields, build a fieldhouse and make additional improvements to expand opportunities for athletes and the community.
The “Let’s Light ’Em Up” campaign remains underway, with gifts continuing to support the next phases of the project.
