NORA SPRINGS — Donald “Don” Dean Walker, 70, of Nora Springs, died Friday, September 4, 2026, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City surrounded by his family.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, September 12, at the Rock Falls Community Center, 3 S. Nottingham St. in Rock Falls. Don will be laid to rest at Rock Grove Cemetery in rural Nora Springs.
Continuing the giving spirit that marked his life, Don became an organ and tissue donor through the Iowa Donor Network.
Don was born April 5, 1956, the son of Orrin “Dean” Walker and Betty Noah Walker. He attended Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock schools and graduated in 1975, although he was known to joke that much of what he learned came from the “school of hard knocks.”
On July 17, 1982, Don married Corinne Ruiter in Meservey. They settled in Nora Springs, raised their children, Ty and Whitney, and shared more than 44 years of marriage.
Hard work was part of Don’s life from an early age. Over the years, he delivered milk, built harvesters, worked at Rockford Brick & Tile, handled early-morning hog chores and worked on the farm.
He eventually found the occupation that suited him best as a fuel delivery man. Don spent more than 30 years serving people throughout the area and picked up the memorable nickname “Hose Dragger” along the way.
The job also reflected the kind of person he was. Don was easygoing, dependable and willing to help when somebody needed him. That sometimes meant answering a call in the middle of the night and heading out to deliver fuel so a family could get its furnace running again.
When he wasn’t working, Don enjoyed getting behind the wheel of his pickup and heading down the road. Willie’s Roadhouse might be playing as he traveled the countryside, stopped to visit with people or simply enjoyed what he considered a little gravel-road travel.
Camping and fishing also brought him happiness, particularly when those activities meant spending time with his family.
Above everything else, Don treasured his children and grandchildren. The time he shared with them became some of the most meaningful of his life.
Don is survived by his wife, Corinne Walker of Nora Springs; son, Ty Walker of Nora Springs; daughter, Whitney (Derek) Johnson of Rockford; grandsons, Cooper and Grayson Walker; sister, Pam Walker of Nora Springs; brother, Tom (Tammy) Walker of Thornton; brother-in-law, Scott Ruiter of Clear Lake, Minnesota; and extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dean Walker and Betty (Don) Rogers; sister, Janice Wilmoth; parents-in-law, LuVern and Dorothy Ruiter; and brother-in-law, Darwin Ruiter.
Don leaves behind memories of a hardworking North Iowan who made a living serving others, enjoyed the simple pleasure of a pickup on a gravel road and could be counted on when a neighbor needed help.
