IOWA CITY — Iowa’s biggest in-state football rivalry takes center stage Saturday night when the Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones collide under the lights at a sold-out Kinnick Stadium.
No. 21 Iowa and Iowa State both enter the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk showdown at 1-0, but they arrive with dramatically different teams and plenty at stake.
Kickoff is scheduled for approximately 6:30 PM Saturday, September 12, with NBC carrying the game nationally.
It will be the first nighttime Cy-Hawk kickoff since 2016 and only the fifth night meeting between the programs in a rivalry that dates to 1894.
The teams have split the previous four nighttime meetings.
For Iowa, Saturday offers a chance to stop a recent run of Cyclone success and protect one of college football’s toughest nighttime home environments.
For Iowa State, it is an opportunity to tighten its grip on the rivalry.
The Cyclones have won the last two meetings and three of the last four games played against Iowa, while also winning their last two trips to Kinnick Stadium.
Iowa State stole last year’s game late
There is no shortage of motivation for the Hawkeyes after what happened a year ago in Ames.
Iowa State defeated Iowa 16-13 on September 6, 2025, with kicker Kyle Konrardy delivering the decisive blow.
Konrardy drilled a 54-yard field goal with 1:52 remaining to put the Cyclones ahead.
Iowa State’s defense then slammed the door on Iowa’s final possession.
The victory gave Iowa State back-to-back wins over the Hawkeyes following a 20-19 triumph at Kinnick Stadium in 2024.
The Cyclones also won 10-7 in Iowa City in 2022.
Iowa State is now trying to beat Iowa three consecutive times for the first time since the Cyclones’ five-game winning streak from 1998 through 2002.
The recent games suggest nobody should expect an easy night.
Each of the last eight Cy-Hawk meetings has been decided by 10 points or fewer. The last four have all been one-score games, with three decided by a field goal or less.
Hawkeyes exploded out of the gate
The Iowa team awaiting the Cyclones Saturday looked considerably more explosive in its opener than the offense Iowa State faced last September.
Iowa demolished Northern Illinois 40-0 in its season opener at Kinnick Stadium, piling up 507 yards of offense while its defense essentially erased the Huskies.
Running back Kamari Moulton was spectacular.
Moulton needed only 11 carries to rush for a career-high 183 yards and two touchdowns.
He broke loose for touchdown runs of 50 and 37 yards during Iowa’s 20-point first quarter and enters the rivalry game as perhaps the most dangerous weapon on the field.
Iowa’s offensive line helped the Hawkeyes pile up nearly 300 rushing yards in the opener.
The passing game remains less settled.
Hank Brown started at quarterback against Northern Illinois and completed 12 of 20 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown.
Jeremy Hecklinski also received five offensive possessions and completed 7 of 16 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown.
Brown directed three touchdown drives on his first three possessions, while Hecklinski also moved the offense effectively enough to keep Iowa’s quarterback competition alive heading into Week 2.
Transfer wide receiver Tony Diaz also made an immediate impact in his Iowa debut, grabbing seven passes for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Iowa defense starts season with a suffocation
As impressive as Iowa’s offense looked, the defense may have made the bigger statement.
Northern Illinois managed only 120 yards of total offense and seven first downs.
The Huskies failed to record their first first down until more than halfway through the third quarter and did not reach 100 yards of total offense until late in the fourth.
Iowa forced two turnovers and recorded another shutout for defensive coordinator Phil Parker.
That defense will face a much different challenge Saturday.
Cyclones unveiled almost completely new team
Few Power Four programs underwent a transformation as dramatic as Iowa State’s.
Former Washington State and South Dakota State coach Jimmy Rogers replaced Matt Campbell and inherited a roster that experienced enormous turnover.
Of the 126 players on Iowa State’s roster, 83 are newcomers.
Rogers passed his first test.
The Cyclones rolled over Southeast Missouri 38-10 in Rogers’ Iowa State coaching debut, building a 28-7 halftime advantage and never allowing the Redhawks back into the game.
Now Rogers gets introduced to the Cy-Hawk rivalry in front of nearly 70,000 fans at Kinnick Stadium.
Jaylen Raynor gives Cyclones experienced hand at quarterback
While much of Iowa State’s roster is new, quarterback Jaylen Raynor brings considerable experience to the position.
The Arkansas State transfer entered the season with 37 career starts, making him one of the most experienced active quarterbacks in college football.
Raynor immediately showed his versatility against Southeast Missouri.
He threw for 184 yards and two touchdowns while also running for two scores.
He completed touchdown passes to Vince Benetti and Easton Miller and twice scored himself on seven-yard runs.
Raynor also has a history of delivering late in games, entering the season with eight career fourth-quarter game-winning drives.
That experience could prove particularly valuable in a rivalry where recent games have routinely gone down to the final minutes.
Cyclone pass rush could be major problem
One of the most intriguing matchups will be Iowa’s offensive line against Iowa State’s rebuilt defensive front.
The Cyclones recorded six sacks in their opener.
Defensive lineman Isaac Terrell was responsible for three of them and earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors.
That new-look Iowa State defense is operating out of the system Rogers and defensive coordinator Jesse Bobbit used successfully during previous stops at South Dakota State and Washington State.
Iowa, however, just demonstrated that it may not need to throw the ball frequently if Moulton and the Hawkeye offensive line can continue running the football at anything resembling their Week 1 pace.
That battle in the trenches could determine the game.
Konrardy remains a dangerous weapon
Iowa fans need no introduction to Kyle Konrardy.
The Iowa State kicker has made five career field goals of at least 50 yards, and two of his most memorable kicks have come at Iowa’s expense.
His 54-yard field goal won last year’s game in Ames.
He also hit a 54-yard game-winner against Iowa at Kinnick Stadium in 2024.
Konrardy opened 2026 by connecting on a 33-yard field goal and all five extra points against Southeast Missouri.
If Saturday turns into another one-possession Cy-Hawk grinder, his leg could again become a major factor.
Kinnick under the lights
The atmosphere should be considerably different from last year’s morning kickoff in Ames.
Iowa has won seven consecutive night games at Kinnick Stadium dating to 2022.
The Hawkeyes are 20-7 overall in night games inside Kinnick.
The last nighttime football meeting between Iowa and Iowa State came in 2016, when the Hawkeyes overwhelmed the Cyclones 42-3.
Saturday also marks another sellout in Iowa City, extending a streak of packed houses at Kinnick.
Former Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard, who was behind center for that 2016 Cy-Hawk blowout, will serve as honorary captain Saturday.
A rivalry loaded with Iowa connections
The rivalry remains deeply rooted in the state.
Iowa lists 39 native Iowans on its 2026 roster, while Iowa State has 25.
Several players on both sides grew up playing against or alongside one another.
Iowa State’s Vince Benetti and Aiden Flora, for example, played at ADM with Iowa running back Brevin Doll.
Flora scored a touchdown in Iowa State’s opener, while Benetti caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Raynor.

Something has to give
Iowa enters Saturday looking stronger, faster and more explosive after one game than it did for much of last season.
Iowa State arrives with an almost entirely reconstructed roster but already showed that Rogers’ new team can create pressure, force mistakes and score quickly.
The Cyclones have recent history on their side.
The Hawkeyes have Kinnick Stadium, a seven-game nighttime winning streak and the bitter memory of consecutive losses to their biggest in-state rival.
And if recent Cy-Hawk history is any indication, Saturday night could come down to one possession, one turnover — or one more kick.
