VERMILLION — Cassidy Hartman delivered one of the biggest performances of her UNI career Saturday, smashing a career-high 31 kills and joining Northern Iowa’s 1,000-kill club, but the Panthers couldn’t finish off South Dakota in a five-set thriller.
The Coyotes survived two UNI match points and escaped with a 25-22, 21-25, 19-25, 25-21, 17-15 victory in the final match of the 2026 South Dakota Classic.
Hartman became the 32nd player in UNI history to reach 1,000 career kills while recording her first career match with at least 30 kills.
She also collected 17 digs for her 27th career double-double and third of the season.
Lily Dykstra turned in another huge offensive performance for Northern Iowa, finishing with a season-high 24 kills, 10 digs and two service aces.
The Panthers and Coyotes split the first 16 points of the opening set before South Dakota created a five-point cushion.
UNI battled back and pulled within one at 19-18 and again at 23-22, but seven attack errors and two service errors proved costly as the Coyotes closed out the set, 25-22.
Northern Iowa responded in the second.
A 4-0 Panther run, highlighted by a Jadyn Petersen service ace, tied the set at 11-11 before UNI moved in front.
Hartman took over offensively, hammering nine kills during the set as Northern Iowa produced 17 kills and hit .235 on its way to a 25-21 victory.
UNI carried that momentum into the third set.
The Panthers held South Dakota to a .154 hitting percentage while producing 16 kills of their own on .317 hitting.
Northern Iowa led for nearly the entire frame, eventually stretching its advantage to seven before closing out a 25-19 victory and taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
South Dakota refused to go away.
UNI opened the fourth set with a 7-4 advantage, but the Coyotes stormed back during a frame that featured 11 ties.
The Panthers pulled even at 16-16, but South Dakota’s offense caught fire, recording 17 kills and hitting .436.
The Coyotes took the fourth set 25-21 and sent the match to a winner-take-all fifth.
Northern Iowa grabbed the early advantage behind Dykstra’s 20th kill of the match and a service ace.
Neither team could pull away.
UNI eventually reached match point twice, but South Dakota survived both opportunities following Panther service errors.
The Coyotes then finished the match in extra points, winning the deciding set 17-15.
Reese Booth also delivered a career performance for UNI, recording 60 assists and 15 digs for her 16th career double-double.
Booth’s 60 assists were the most by a Panther since Rachel Koop recorded 61 against Evansville in 2019.
Petersen tied for the match lead with 32 digs, while Taryn Rice collected a career-high 20 digs.
Isabelle Elliott added seven kills and Maryn Bixby finished with five.
Hartman’s 31 kills marked the first 30-kill performance by a Northern Iowa player since Karlie Taylor accomplished the feat against Evansville in 2018.
Hartman is also the first Panther to enter UNI’s 1,000-career-kill club since Kira Fallert in 2023.
Dykstra recorded her fifth career match with at least 20 kills and her second this season. Her performance also produced the third double-double of her career and first of 2026.
The defeat snapped UNI’s three-match winning streak in five-set contests dating back to last season. Northern Iowa’s previous five-set loss came against Louisville in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
The Panthers had already shown their ability to survive a five-set battle earlier this season, storming back to defeat Loyola-Chicago in a five-set thriller at the Cyclone Invitational.
UNI entered the season as the preseason favorite to capture a fifth consecutive Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championship.
The road gets even tougher Friday.
Northern Iowa will face No. 10 Creighton on Sept. 11 in the opening match of the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas.
