LAURENS — A Northern Iowa man has been arrested on an OWI charge nearly two months after authorities were called to a trail where a man was found lying on the ground next to a golf cart.
The Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were notified at about 9:35 a.m. July 3, 2026, of a male lying on the ground beside a golf cart on the Laurens Prairie Preservation Trail near the intersection of Highway 10 and West Veterans Road in Laurens.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene before transporting him to Pocahontas Community Hospital for further evaluation.
Authorities continued investigating the incident and later obtained an arrest warrant for 59-year-old Eric Lawrence McKenney of Laurens.
McKenney is accused of operating while intoxicated, first offense, a serious misdemeanor. Authorities also issued him citations for failure to maintain control and failure to have a valid driver’s license, both scheduled violations.
McKenney was arrested August 29 and transported to the Pocahontas County Jail to await an initial appearance before a magistrate.
The Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Laurens Police Department, Pocahontas Police Department and Pocahontas Ambulance.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and McKenney is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
