Patricia was born March 17, 1934, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of Alexander Smith and Henrietta Morrison Smith.
After graduating from high school in 1951, Patricia continued her education at Saint Mary’s School of Nursing in Montreal. Her nursing career and adventurous spirit eventually took her far from home as she followed a dream of moving to California.
Patricia worked as a nurse at Stanford University Hospital and later found an opportunity that combined work with her love of travel when she became a stewardess for California Eastern Aviation. The position allowed her to travel the world and added another chapter to a life filled with curiosity and adventure.
While living in California, Patricia met Robert Hoadley Jr. on a blind date arranged by their mutual best friends.
The introduction proved to be a lasting one. Patricia and Robert were married August 22, 1959, in San Mateo, California.
They later made their home in Kanawha, where they raised four children, Sherry, Bonnie, Ross and Cara.
Patricia enjoyed reading, cooking, baking and welcoming family and friends into her home. She was a member of Tri-T-Club and The Questers and volunteered with numerous organizations, including hospice.
Family gatherings were especially important to Patricia. She treasured time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and also enjoyed traveling with friends and sharing a good glass of wine.
Those closest to Patricia remember a woman who was unapologetically true to herself, loved books and perfume, and remained deeply devoted to her family and faith.
Above all, Patricia will be remembered for the sincere empathy and compassion she showed others throughout her life.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Sherry Maly, Bonnie (Rob) Berg, Ross Hoadley and Cara Hoadley (Kerry Elliott); grandchildren Cortney Maly, Ashley Maly, Hallie Berg, Jacob Berg, Kaylara Hoadley, Kenzie Hoadley, Montana Elliott (Vess Cooks) and Caden Elliott; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Patricia was preceded in death by her parents, Alexander and Henrietta Smith; husband, Robert Hoadley Jr.; and siblings Owen Smith, Alister Smith and Dorothy Reynolds.
Her family believes Patricia would leave those she loved with a simple message: “I love you more.”
