MASON CITY — One of two Mason City women accused of financially exploiting a dependent adult has been convicted through a plea agreement, while her co-defendant remains charged with three felonies and is scheduled for an October trial.
NIT first reported in April that Jessica Marie Glaspey and Sabrina Jo Burke were accused of using a dependent adult’s credit cards and medical benefits without authorization while purchasing goods and services for themselves.
The investigation began in October 2025 after Mason City police received a referral concerning suspected dependent-adult abuse. Police worked with the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services during the investigation.
Court records show Glaspey was originally charged with four counts of dependent-adult abuse and one count of unauthorized use of a credit card involving more than $1,500 but less than $10,000. All five original charges were Class D felonies.
Glaspey ultimately entered negotiated guilty pleas to one count of dependent-adult abuse as a simple misdemeanor and two counts of forgery as aggravated misdemeanors. The forgery convictions replaced one dependent-adult-abuse charge and the unauthorized-use-of-a-credit-card charge.
Two additional Class D felony dependent-adult-abuse charges were dismissed by the court.
Glaspey’s case was formally disposed of through a guilty plea on May 1, 2026. Court records also show that a restitution payment plan was filed in July.
Her legal problems did not end there.
A probation-violation report was filed June 3, followed by probation-revocation proceedings and a statewide bench warrant carrying a $15,000 cash requirement. Court records list a negotiated guilty plea to the probation violation.
An order disposing of the probation-revocation proceedings was filed August 25. The bench warrant was canceled and recalled the following day. The available case summary does not specify the complete terms imposed in the original sentence or the probation-revocation disposition.
Burke, meanwhile, has not been convicted.
She remains charged with unauthorized use of a credit card involving more than $1,500 but less than $10,000 and two counts of dependent-adult abuse. All three charges are Class D felonies.
Burke entered a written plea of not guilty on April 2. Her case has been continued several times while attorneys conduct depositions and prepare motions.
Her next pretrial conference is scheduled for October 5 at 1 p.m. A jury trial is scheduled to begin October 20 at 8:30 a.m. in Cerro Gordo County District Court.
Burke was arrested February 22 on a warrant carrying a $10,000 cash-or-surety bond. She posted bond the following day and was released while the criminal case proceeds.
The charges against Burke remain allegations. She is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
