CLEAR LAKE — A Mason City woman who obtained a 94-year-old retirement-home resident’s financial information and used it to make unauthorized purchases is now serving a jail sentence after accepting a negotiated plea agreement.
Erin Elizabeth Hanson, 42, was booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail at 1:01 a.m. Sunday, August 23, 2026.
Jail records list Hanson as serving sentences for caretaker dependent-adult abuse by exploitation and identity theft under $1,500. She is being held without bond because she is serving court-ordered jail time rather than awaiting trial.
Clear Lake Police Chief Mike Colby said Hanson obtained the elderly resident’s financial information while working at a local retirement facility.
“While employed at a local retirement home, Ms. Hanson obtained a 94-year-old resident’s financial information,” Chief Colby told NIT. “Hanson used the information to make purchases from a retailer without consent or knowledge of the victim.”
Colby said Hanson (pictured at top) was considered a caretaker because of the victim’s age, vulnerability and residency at the retirement home.
The criminal conduct occurred January 14, 2026.
Prosecutors initially charged Hanson with dependent-adult abuse as a Class D felony. She was also charged with fourth-degree theft, a serious misdemeanor, and identity theft under $1,500, an aggravated misdemeanor.
The case concluded through a negotiated plea agreement July 23.
Under the agreement, Hanson pleaded guilty to a reduced simple-misdemeanor charge of dependent-adult abuse. District Court Judge Karen Kaufman Salic sentenced her to 15 days in jail and two years of probation on that count.
Hanson also pleaded guilty to aggravated-misdemeanor identity theft under $1,500.
Salic imposed a 365-day jail sentence for identity theft but suspended 350 days, leaving 15 days to be served. Hanson was also placed on probation for two years.
An $855 fine imposed on the identity-theft conviction was suspended.
Court records show Hanson must undergo a mental-health evaluation and satisfy a DNA requirement.
The fourth-degree theft charge was dismissed by the court as part of the resolution of the case.
The records provided do not specify whether the two 15-day jail portions are being served concurrently or consecutively.
Hanson has previously encountered Mason City law enforcement.
That earlier case included accusations of theft, public intoxication, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of methamphetamine and prescription drugs. Hanson pleaded not guilty to those charges at the time. The cited story did not report the eventual outcome of that case.
Hanson’s present convictions involve a particularly vulnerable victim who was dependent upon the care and trust of retirement-home employees.
The name of the retirement facility and the identity of the 94-year-old victim were not released.
