NIACC’s Olive is ICCAC softball player of week

IOWA CITY - Police are attempting to sort out a vicious stabbing incident in which a homeless Iowa man allegedly plunged a knife into his victim and pushed the injured man into a river.

MASON CITY – NIACC sophomore shortstop Katy Olive was selected as the co-ICCAC Division II softball player of the week for the week of March 11-17.

Olive, who is from Minneapolis, Minn., shared the honor with Iowa Central freshman second baseman Kennedy Palmer.

Oive is the third different NIACC player to win the league’s weekly award this season. Second baseman Brynnlin Kroymann won the award Feb. 12-18 and Macy Kellar was the league’s pitcher of the week for the week of March 4-10.

Olive collected 20 hits in eight games during the week the Trojans spent in the Kansas City area going 20 for 30 (.667). Olive had five home runs, three doubles and a triple while driving in 16 runs and scoring 16 runs.

Olive also stole 14 bases to become the school’s career leader with 98. She is also tied for second on the school’s career home run list and ranks second with 113 runs scored.

Olive leads NJCAA Division II with 35 stolen bases and is tied for eighth with 10 home runs. She became the 15th member of NIACC’s 100-hit club and is tied for 13th on the school list with the 100 career hits.

NIACC (11-11) returns to action Thursday in a non-league doubleheader at Indian Hills. The first game in Ottumwa is slated for 2 p.m.
