WAVERLY — A Waverly woman is facing a Class B felony and a Charles City man is charged with a Class D felony after police say an investigation uncovered more than $38,000 in financial losses suffered by en elderly victim.

The Waverly Police Department said it completed its investigation on August 14, 2026, into alleged financial exploitation of the elderly.

Renee Lynne Owens, 49, of Waverly, was arrested and charged with first-offense financial exploitation of an older individual, a Class B felony.

Police allege her conduct caused more than $34,000 in financial losses.

Iowa court records show the Bremer County case, 02091 FECR011963, was filed August 14. The listed offense date is May 20, 2025.

Owens made an initial appearance August 14, when bond was set at $25,000 cash or surety. Court records show attorney Andrew Carl Abbott later entered an appearance on her behalf.

Jail custody records show Owens was booked into the Bremer County Jail at 9:11 a.m. August 14. Her custody record was updated at 11:17 p.m. August 17 and listed her as still in custody at the Bremer County Jail at that time.

The Waverly Police Department said the Class B felony charge carries a potential sentence of up to 25 years in prison and cited possible fines of up to $100,000.

Jonathon P. Owens, 27, of Charles City, was also charged with financial exploitation of an older individual.

Police said his alleged conduct resulted in approximately $4,000 in financial losses. His charge is a Class D felony.

The department said a Class D felony is punishable by up to five years in prison and fines of up to $10,245.

Both defendants were booked into the Bremer County Jail.

Jonathon Owens was released after posting a $5,000 bond, according to police. Court case information for Jonathon Owens was not available in the records provided.

The new felony case is not the only criminal matter currently pending against Renee Owens.

She is also facing an operating while under the influence charge in Fayette County stemming from an alleged March 18, 2026, incident.

That case, 01331 OWCR075827, charges Owens with first-offense operating while under the influence, a serious misdemeanor.

Court records show a warrant was ordered May 11 and later served August 9 by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

Owens made an initial appearance August 10 and was released on a $1,000 unsecured appearance bond. A preliminary hearing had been scheduled for August 26 but was canceled by court order on August 11.

Owens (pictured at top) is also charged with open container — driver age 21 or older — in Fayette County in connection with the same March 18 incident. That charge is a scheduled violation under case 01331 STA0036935.

No disposition has been entered in either Fayette County case.

The Bremer County financial exploitation case also remains pending.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
