MASON CITY – North Iowa Area Community College offers classes at the College’s area Education Centers. There are centers located in Charles City, Garner, Hampton, Lake Mills and Osage. The following classes are being offered and are grouped by city. Please see registration details at the end of each city listing.

Charles City
• A class titled Watercolor Painting-Tulips will begin on Thursday, April 4 and continue on Thursdays until April 25. This class will take place at the Charles City NIACC Center from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Beginning to intermediate adult painters will benefit from instructor Nancy Scherer’s expertise with watercolor painting. Adults at any stage of their painting journey are welcome. If you’ve always wanted to learn to paint with watercolor, but needed a launching pad, this is a great place to start. Students are required to bring needed supplies to the first class; please contact the Charles City Center for a list. • On Mondays, April 8, 15 and 22 at the Charles City Center and Wednesdays, April 10, 17 and 24 at the Elks Club Pond, a class titled Learn to Fly Fish will be offered from 7:00-8:30 p.m. This course is designed to introduce anglers to fly fishing basics including background, set-up and assembly, casting, knots, flies and choosing where to fish. Fly fishing is an increasingly popular pastime that can be used on warm water ponds, rivers, and lakes as well as for coldwater-dwelling trout right here in NE Iowa and around the country. Learn the basics that will introduce you to a lifelong pursuit. Instructors are Ryan Rahmiller and Jared Koenigsfeld. • On Thursday, April 11, a Digital Photography Class for Beginners will be held from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at the Charles City Center in room 110. Photographer Dee Schweizer will get you started with your digital camera. Topics will include basic camera settings and file formats, tips for composing good pictures, transferring photos from your camera to your computer, and photo organization tools. Hands-on assistance; bring your digital camera, a memory card, and any questions you have! Tuition for this course is $15 and the course number is 86603, please have number ready when you register.

• On Saturday, April 13, a Digital Photography Class for Intermediates will be held from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the Charles City Center in room 110. Photographer Dee Schweizer will help you gain familiarity with your digital camera. This hands-on class will include topics such as camera settings, venturing out of automatic mode, and transferring photos from your camera to your computer. Participants will practice taking photos with their digital camera with various settings and practice loading them onto a computer. Also included is a brief tutorial on uploading photos and online sharing. Bring your camera and memory card; laptop optional. Tuition for this course is $15 and the course number is 86605, please have number ready when you register.

• A class titled Watercolor Painting-Trees will begin on Thursday, May 2 and continue on Thursdays until May 23. This class will be held from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at the Charles City Center in room 110. Beginning to intermediate adult painters will enjoy painting birch, maple, oak and pine trees at different seasons of the year. If drawing and painting trees is on your “bucket list”, this is a no regrets opportunity for you with instructor Nancy Scherer. Students are required to bring needed supplies to the first class; please contact the Charles City Center for a list. Garner
• A Yoga class will be held on Tuesdays, April 2 to April 30, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Garner Education Center. Even simple changes in lifestyle can add up to big benefits and help you feel good. In this class we will work toward greater flexibility, strength, and stress reduction with certified teacher Barb Eisenmenger. Bring a yoga mat or large towel and water. Wear non-restrictive clothes. It’s never too late to begin! Tuition for this course is $25 and the course number is 86432, please have number ready when you register.

• On Mondays, April 8 to 29, a class titled Art Adventures: Sculpting will be held from 3:45 – 5:00 p.m. at the Garner Education Center. Fun and easy with almost no rules in this after-school art class for students in grades 4 & 5. Develop your creativity as you choose the sculpture you wish to make, then mix the paper mache paste, prepare strips of newspaper and begin layering to design a masterpiece with your teacher Dawn Bassett. Paint your finished piece and you’ve got an original! Supplies furnished in class. Tuition for this course is $19 and the course number is 86422, please have number ready when you register.

• On Mondays, April 8 to 29, a Knitting for Beginners class will be held from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the Garner Education Center. This is the class for you if you’ve never held knitting needles before or if you learned to knit and don’t remember how to get started again. You will learn the basics of knitting: the knit and purl stitches and reading patterns with teacher Marlene Parrott. You will complete two projects in these classes. Bring size 5 knitting needles and one ball of cotton yarn to class. Tuition for this course is $35 and the course number is 86436, please have number ready when you register.

• On Tuesday, April 9, a class titled Your Money, Your Future will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Garner Education Center. This free workshop is a lifeline that will provide simple, easy-to-understand and workable strategies to eliminate debt. Examine your spending habits and learn to manage your personal finances; including credit cards, savings and investments. Also, learn tips to decrease your expenses with ISU Extension Specialist Brenda Schmitt. Supper is provided at no cost. The course number for this free workshop is 86439, please have number ready when you register.

• A Motorcycle Rider Course will be offered Friday, April 19 from 6:00-10:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, April 20 and 21 from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. In this three day course, you will learn how to operate a motorcycle safely, with emphasis on the special skills and mental attitude necessary for dealing with traffic. In the classroom, you’ll learn about the different types of motorcycles, their controls, how they operate and how to become a responsible rider. After a thorough review of your motorcycle controls, you will move to the outdoor riding range and your RiderCoach will start you off with straight-line riding, turning, shifting and stopping. You will gradually progress to cornering, swerving and emergency braking. The tuition for this course is $150 and the course number is 86338, please have number ready when you register.

Hampton
• On Monday, April 8th, a class titled Over 50 Series: Estate Planning will be offered from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Hampton Center One. Do you have the working knowledge to draft common estate planning documents such as a will, revocable living trust and durable power of attorney? Are you over 50 and know you need some of these things done, but not a good idea of what and why? Join us Attorney Megan Rosenberg leads us in a discussion of planning your will, what an estate is and what you can do to plan ahead for future challenges. • On Saturday, April 13, a Collage on Canvas class will be offered from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the Hampton Center One. We will explore layering various papers, images and words while adding stamped and painted embellishments as desired. You will take home a piece of artwork that is uniquely yours and ready to hang as you celebrate the collage-making process. Supply fee paid in class. Lake Mills
• On Monday, April 8, a class titled Minister to Grieving People will be offered from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Lake Mills Education Center. Do you wonder what to say to your friend who is grieving the death of a loved one? What would be helpful to do? So much that it’s easier to try to avoid them or maybe shower them with platitudes? You are not alone in wondering. This class will explore ways to support your hurting friend. The tuition for this course is $9 and the course number is 86527, please have number ready when you register.

• On Tuesday, April 9, a Homemade Cosmetics & Products class will be held at the Lake Mills Education Center from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Come learn to make your own homemade lotion, deodorant, chapstick and laundry detergents from certified, organic products. These products are safer for your skin and the environment! Enjoy the satisfaction of making your own products and saving lots of money! $8 fee will be paid to instructor Louise Louw for materials and containers. • On Saturday, April 13, a Moped Safety class will be held from 8:30 a.m. -2:30 p.m. at the Lake Mills Education Center. Awareness, common sense, sharp eyes and a helmet are keys to safety. Course required for anyone under 16 wanting a moped license; also good in preparation for obtaining a driver’s license. You must be 14 or within 6 months of 14th birth date. Osage
• On Mondays, April 1-May 13, a class titled Tai Chi for Arthritis will be offered from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Osage Middle School Gym. This easy to learn, low impact form of exercise is a safe and effective method to benefit arthritis management. Instructor Deneen Schweiger will teach you how to improve heart and lung capacity, posture, flexibility, muscle strength and balance in your comfortable clothes and flat shoes. Recognized by the Arthritis Foundation as a highly effective, low impact exercise, statistical testing has shown this program to be 60% efficient in preventing patient falls. • On Thursday, April 4, a class titled Flash Fiction will be offered at the Osage Library from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Some say, “Flash Fiction – once you try it, you’re hooked.” Learn to write a complete story in 100, 55, or even less words complete with characters, plot, conflict and resolution, and then find out if it’s true. Jed Magee will show you how to tighten up your writing by eliminating unnecessary words and phrases. There may even be a group exercise in writing a Flash Fiction story. • On Saturday, April 6, a class titled Marketing for Small Businesses will be offered from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at the Osage Library. Instructor Deb Brown will show you how to use social media to effectively bring people through your doors to shop. Hear and discover ways you can use Facebook, blogging, Twitter, Google, syndication and movies as well as face to face sharing to help people to hear your story, see your store and location in person and online. An interactive class, bring your questions and ideas to class. Tuition for this course is $29 and the course number is 86516, please have number ready when you register.

• On Tuesdays, April 9-May 14, a Jitterbug, Swing and Rumba Class will be offered from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Osage V.F.W. Instructors Daryl and Lisa Johnson will teach you the basics for beginning Jitterbug, Swing and Rumba with grace and style for which they are known. You will have an opportunity to learn several dance steps with this class so you can feel confident on the dance floor. Please register with a partner for the best dance experience. • On Thursdays, April 18-May 2, a Digital Photography class will be offered from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Osage Public Library. Instructor Michael Groesbeck will teach you how to improve the quality of your digital photos and learn the technicalities of your camera: how shutter speed, aperture, lighting and composition affect your finished photographs. Take photos, critique them with your peers in class and discover how to upload your photos to a computer. • On Tuesday, May 7, a class titled Italian Sweets will be offered from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Osage High School Family Consumer Science Room. Take a mini trip to an Italian table with some dolci…sweets with a different twist! Tiramisu, Biscotti and more! Be ready to cook hands-on and savor these wonderful desserts. Instructor is Sandra Olson, bring take home container. Tuition is $25 and the course number is 86535, please have number ready when you register.
