DES MOINES — Iowa authorities are searching for two residents charged in connection with the death of an infant who was allegedly attacked and killed by a pit bull terrier inside a Des Moines apartment.
Des Moines police say officers and Des Moines Fire Department rescue personnel were called just after 6:30 a.m. on April 3, 2026, to an apartment in the 3600 block of Kennedy Drive for a report of an infant in cardiac arrest.
The caller reported that a dog inside the residence had injured the infant and that the child was not showing signs of life.
When officers and medics arrived, they found the infant deceased and beyond help.
The Des Moines Police Department’s Special Victims Section has been investigating the case. Detectives now have active charges against the infant’s parents, identified as 37-year-old Elderidge Graham Sr. and 30-year-old Kristi Haney.
Graham and Haney are each charged with one count of child endangerment causing death, a Class B felony, and three counts of child endangerment creating substantial risk, an aggravated misdemeanor.
According to police, evidence indicates the infant was attacked by a pit bull terrier that was known to have been aggressive in the past. Detectives also say they found evidence that statements provided to investigators about supervision of the infant were not factual.
The dog responsible for the attack was surrendered to authorities and humanely euthanized.
Police are asking anyone with information about the current or recent location of Graham or Haney to call 911.
The case adds to the horror of a deadly domestic scene involving a vulnerable child, a dog authorities say had a known history of aggression, and allegations that adults responsible for the infant’s care failed to provide the protection required.
The investigation remains active.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
