SIDNEY, IOWA — A Colombian national visiting the United States for the FIFA World Cup was jailed in Iowa after deputies say he hit 90 mph on an Interstate highway, refused to stop and led law enforcement on a 10-mile pursuit.
Nestor Morantes Segura, 33, of Bogotá, Colombia, was arrested July 3, 2026, by the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office after a traffic stop turned into a chase.
According to the sheriff’s office, a Fremont County K9 deputy clocked a 2026 Hyundai Elantra traveling southbound on Interstate 29 at 90 mph in a posted 70 mph zone at about 1:25 a.m.
When deputies attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver allegedly failed to yield and continued southbound at a high rate of speed.
Deputies say the vehicle eluded law enforcement for about 10 miles before a stop stick tire-deflation device was deployed, forcing the vehicle to stop. Segura was then taken into custody without further incident.
Segura (pictured at top) allegedly told deputies he could not hear the emergency siren and mistakenly believed drivers were not required to pull over if they could only see emergency lights.
He was booked into the Fremont County Jail on a charge of eluding, a serious misdemeanor under Iowa law. Authorities also said he faced charges related to excessive speeding.
Segura later posted a $1,000 cash bond and was released from custody.
The sheriff’s office said Segura was a Colombian citizen visiting the United States for the FIFA World Cup. His release allowed him to continue on to Kansas City, where Colombia defeated Ghana 1-0 on July 3 in a Round of 32 match, advancing to the Round of 16. Jhon Arias scored the match’s lone goal for Colombia, which next drew Switzerland in the knockout stage. ([reuters.com][1])
Segura is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
