LINN COUNTY — A 34-year-old Iowa man was killed Saturday night after authorities say he sped away from deputies, blew through a stop sign and crashed off the roadway.
The fatal crash happened at approximately 9:17 p.m. Saturday, August 8, 2026, near the intersection of Wright Brothers Boulevard and Lefebure Road in Linn County.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, Robert Oppenheimer, 34, of Olin, was driving a 2020 Ford F-150 southbound on Lefebure Road while actively eluding Linn County sheriff’s deputies.
Investigators said Oppenheimer failed to stop at the stop sign at Wright Brothers Boulevard.
The pickup then left the roadway and crashed.
Oppenheimer suffered fatal injuries and was transported by Area Ambulance to the Iowa State Medical Examiner.
The State Patrol crash report indicates Oppenheimer was not wearing a seat belt.
The circumstances surrounding the pursuit and crash remain under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
The deadly incident comes amid other recent cases involving motorists allegedly fleeing Iowa law enforcement. NIT reported just days ago that an alleged drunk and barred driver was collared following an eluding run in Cerro Gordo County.
NIT also previously reported on a Linn County pursuit in which a wanted driver allegedly raced through the countryside at approximately 100 mph before crashing into a farm field.
The Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Fairfax Fire Department, Area Ambulance and LifeGuard assisted at the scene.
The Iowa Department of Transportation reported 177 traffic fatalities statewide for 2026 as of August 7. Because the latest DOT total predates this August 8 crash, the statewide figure remains preliminary and may increase as fatal crashes are processed.
