FORT DODGE — A late-night fight outside a Fort Dodge convenience store ended with an 18-year-old man suffering a serious arm wound and a Bayard man behind bars on a felony assault charge.
Fort Dodge police said the Webster County Telecommunications Center received a report at approximately 10:55 p.m. Saturday, August 8, 2026, of an altercation between two males outside the Star Convenience Store, 1601 5th Ave. S.
Officers with the Fort Dodge Police Department and deputies with the Webster County Sheriff’s Office rushed to the scene and located 18-year-old Dawson D. Skoland Rattray of Fort Dodge suffering from a laceration to his right arm.
Witnesses told authorities the suspected attacker had fled before officers arrived.
Police rendered aid to Skoland Rattray until Fort Dodge firefighters and emergency personnel arrived. He was transported by ambulance before being flown by Life Flight to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Authorities said his injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
The Fort Dodge Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division joined the investigation, processing the scene and interviewing witnesses.
As investigators developed information about where the suspected attacker might be located, officers went to that location and detained him without incident.
Police identified the suspect as 45-year-old David J. Richman of Bayard, Iowa.
Richman was arrested and charged with:
Assault causing serious injury, a Class D felony.
The incident occurred at the same Fort Dodge convenience store where two men were wounded in a gunfight investigated by Fort Dodge police in 2023.

Richman is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
