SUMNER — Steven C. Reuter, 98, of Sumner, died Thursday, August 13, 2026, at Cobblestone in Sumner, bringing to a close a life that included a long career serving the state of Iowa and more than seven decades of marriage and family life.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 31, 2026, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner, with Rev. Tracy Hinkel officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Steven was born February 13, 1928, in West Union, Iowa, the son of Carl and Alvina (Gienapp) Reuter. On December 10, 1950, he married Marlys M. Schnadt. The couple shared more than 74 years together before Marlys died in May 2025.
Much of Steven’s working life was spent in public service. He had a 34-year career with the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Communications Division, retiring in 1994. Retirement did not immediately end his working days; he later spent about 10 years as a groundskeeper at the Jackson County Fairgrounds.
Steven is survived by his daughter, Janet Reuter Castor; his son, Gene Reuter and his wife, Patty; and other family members who carry forward the memories of a man whose life stretched across nearly a century of Iowa history. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Marlys.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Sumner Emergency Medical Services, the Sumner Fire Department or the Sumner Public Library.
