FLOYD – Sandra “Sandy” Kuykendall, 75, of Floyd, passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2026, in Charles City with her husband, Mark, by her side.
A celebration of Sandy’s life will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, August 21, at the Floyd Community Center. A light lunch will be served.
A private interment will follow at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City.
Sandy was born March 30, 1951, in Charles City to Elaine Hollar and Walter LaBounty. She was raised alongside nine siblings in a busy household where loyalty, resilience and close family bonds became important parts of her character.
She made her home in Floyd for more than 20 years and enjoyed the familiarity and neighborly connections of small-town life.
Sandy and Mark shared an enduring relationship. They first married in 1983 and remarried in 2003. Some of their happiest times were spent fishing, camping and enjoying the outdoors together.
An enthusiastic reader, Sandy particularly enjoyed the novels of Stephen King. Dogs were also constant companions throughout her life, and she was seldom without one nearby.
Sandy devoted much of her working life to caring for others as a nursing assistant. She also worked as a convenience-store cashier, where the job gave her an opportunity to visit with customers and remain connected with people throughout the community.
Family members remember Sandy as independent, determined and strong-willed. She confronted lung cancer with those same qualities, experiencing nearly a decade of remission before the disease returned.
Her family remained close during her final hours. Along with Mark, Sandy was surrounded by daughters Niki and Brandi; sisters Bonnie, Debby, Janene and Sharon; and nieces Tina and Maddie.
Those carrying forward her memory include her husband, Mark; daughters Nicole “Niki” Litzel and her husband, Lewis, of Waterloo, and Brandi Hoffmann and her husband, Joe, of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; stepdaughter Linda and her son, Casey; six grandchildren, Alena, Easton, Kara, Mattie, Luke and Daniel; her four surviving sisters; and numerous additional relatives and friends.
Sandy’s commitment to Casey throughout the past 20 years held an especially meaningful place in her life.
She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Evelyn; parents Elaine Hollar and Walter LaBounty; sisters Carol Maschek and Gloria Rover; brothers Gary Dostart and Larry Freiberg; and parents-in-law Clarus “Corky” and Norma Kuykendall.
