MASON CITY – A two vehicle accident was reported at approximately 8:45 am, Tuesday, at 19th Street SW and South McKinley Avenue.
Mason City Police and other emergency responders were dispatched to the accident. At the scene, a GMC Yukon had struck a pole and was resting on the railroad tracks.
Two young males were escorted to an ambulance for an examination. No transports to the hospital were necessary. The Toyota Avalon they were traveling in had major frontal damage.
One westbound lane was temporarily closed.
Police said this afternoon that Kathryn Jean Nelson, 32, of Mason City, who was driving the Yukon, was cited for failure to obey a stop or yield sign.

I dobt 32 year old Kathern is a Newman student or parent.
How so? She could have had a kid at 20. I’m sure that’s old enough to have a Newman student.
The speed limit there is lower than it used to be anyway. They use the excuse of the over pass. Why??????????? Nothing needed to change.
Well, the kids gotta learn to race sometime! Odd that only the Newman people want to race while everyone else is obeying all the posted traffic control signs. Damn West End.
The Newman parents and students consider this their personal race track. Posted speed limits, stop signs and any other form of traffic control is apparently not meant for them. Not a bit surprised this happened.
really, a cop sits all day long at the bottom of the overpass & the old AC Nielson builing parking lot. EVERYDAY ALL DAY.
I wonder if speed was a factor in this.I drive this road daily. I get passed by everyone, I generally drive 5 over, ya I know I’m speeding too. I have yet to see the police out there enforcing the speed limit at this time of day. Oh by the way I’m glad no one was seriously hurt.
