OELWEIN — A Northern Iowa predator allegedly took to the streets in a set of wheels law enforcement didn’t have listed on his registry — and the drive ended with him getting hauled to jail.
Ronald Ernest Tripp (pictured at top), 74, of Oelwein was arrested at 1:16 PM on September 16, 2026, for an alleged violation of Iowa’s Sex Offender Registry requirements.
According to Oelwein police, Tripp was spotted driving a vehicle in downtown Oelwein that he had not reported to the sex offender registry.
Police arrested Tripp and transported him to the Fayette County Jail, where he was held for an initial court appearance.
Tripp has since been released from custody after posting bond, according to current Fayette County custody information.
Sex offenders must report their vehicles
Vehicle information is considered relevant information under Iowa’s sex offender registration laws. Registered offenders are required to notify authorities when that information changes.
That requirement can include vehicles owned or operated by a registrant along with identifying information about those vehicles.
Failure to comply with Iowa Code Chapter 692A can bring another criminal charge. A first qualifying violation can be charged as an aggravated misdemeanor, while subsequent violations can carry more serious penalties.
Police did not specify in their initial announcement the exact level of the charge filed against Tripp in the September 16 case.
Tripp has a history with Iowa’s sex offender laws
Tripp’s name is not new to Iowa courts.
Court records show Tripp was convicted in 2010 of indecent contact with a child and was placed on probation while also receiving a 10-year special sentence.
Records further show that in 2011, Tripp pleaded guilty to multiple sex offender exclusion-zone violations along with harassment charges. His probation was later revoked and he was incarcerated.
Tripp also became the subject of a civil commitment proceeding under Iowa’s Sexually Violent Predator Act. The Iowa Supreme Court ultimately reversed that commitment in 2018 after finding that statutory requirements for the proceeding had not been met.
The newest case adds another alleged sex offender registry violation to Tripp’s lengthy legal history.
Current custody records from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office list Tripp as out of custody and indicate that he bonded out following the September 16 arrest.
Tripp’s newest charge remains an accusation. He is presumed innocent of the alleged registry violation unless and until proven guilty in court.
