CEDAR FALLS — UNI Panther volleyball unleashed a relentless service attack and a season-best blocking performance Saturday, September 19, knocking off Wichita State in four sets to complete a perfect home-opening weekend.
Northern Iowa defeated the Shockers 25-16, 26-28, 25-22 and 25-14, improving to 6-5 as the Panthers closed the non-conference portion of their schedule.
The victory came one day after UNI jolted Wichita State in a straight-set sweep. Saturday’s follow-up extended Northern Iowa’s home winning streak to 14 consecutive matches dating back to last season.
The Panthers hammered Wichita State with 13 service aces — their most in a match since recording 15 against Drake in the 2022 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship. UNI also piled up a season-high 13 blocks while hitting .253 and recording 56 kills.
Northern Iowa set the tone immediately. Lily Dykstra, Cassidy Hartman and Jadyn Petersen each delivered early aces as the Panthers raced to an 11-4 lead in the opening set.
UNI hit .323 with 12 kills and never trailed in the frame. Grace Hannam, Reese Booth and Petersen added more damage from the service line as the Panthers finished the set with seven aces and rolled to a 25-16 victory.
Wichita State responded in the second set, producing 17 kills and hitting .245. The Shockers grabbed a 15-14 advantage and pushed the Panthers into extra points. UNI fought off two set points before Wichita State escaped with a 28-26 win to even the match.
The third set opened as a back-and-forth battle before Northern Iowa created separation around the media timeout. The Panthers stretched their advantage to six points and then withstood a late Wichita State charge.
The Shockers erased four consecutive set points, but UNI finally closed out a 25-22 victory behind 17 kills and a .297 hitting percentage.
Booth opened the fourth set with another ace, and Northern Iowa quickly began pulling away. The Panthers hit .346 with 11 kills in the frame, while Petersen delivered her sixth ace of the afternoon.
Booth added another late ace before UNI slammed the door with a dominant 25-14 victory.
Dykstra led all players with 19 kills while hitting a blistering .425. She also collected seven digs and two blocks. The performance continued a strong stretch for Dykstra, who recently erupted for 20 kills as UNI swept Rice at the Rice Invitational.
Hartman recorded 14 kills, eight digs and three blocks. It was her ninth double-digit kill performance of the season and the 49th of her UNI career.
Hannam produced a career-high seven kills and matched Maryn Bixby with seven blocks. Bixby also contributed seven kills, continuing the defensive work that recently earned the former Dike-New Hartford standout Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Bixby has recorded at least three blocks in six of her seven appearances this season, while Hannam has finished with two or more blocks in every UNI match.
Booth directed the Panther offense with 38 assists and delivered a career-high 20 digs for her sixth consecutive double-double. She also tied her career best with three service aces.
Petersen finished with a career-high six aces and 14 digs. Her six aces were the most by an MVC player in a four-set match this season and tied for the second-highest single-match total in the conference.
Isabelle Elliott chipped in five kills and three blocks, while Kaitlyn Sellner recorded two blocks in her season debut.
Saturday marked UNI’s fifth match with at least 10 blocks this season. The Panthers have recorded seven or more blocks in 10 of their 11 matches.
Northern Iowa improved to 55-17-1 all-time against Wichita State.
