MASON CITY — Local children and families will have an opportunity to meet the people behind the helmets, explore fire safety and enjoy an afternoon inside the Mason City Fire Department during its 2026 Fire Prevention Open House.
The family-friendly event will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, October 11, at the Mason City Fire Department, 350 Fifth Street SW.
Firefighters will welcome visitors for live demonstrations, hands-on activities and approachable lessons designed to help families stay safe at home. The afternoon also gives children a chance to meet Mason City firefighters in a relaxed setting and learn more about the people who respond when the community needs help.
This year’s message is “Charge into fire safety. Safe charging is a superpower.”
Firefighters will share simple ways to use and charge batteries safely at home as rechargeable devices become an increasingly common part of everyday life. Phones, tablets, toys, power tools, bicycles and other equipment can all rely on rechargeable batteries, making safe charging habits an important part of modern fire prevention.
The department is encouraging residents to “plug in, power up and stay safe.”
The Open House will combine those practical lessons with activities intended to make fire prevention memorable and enjoyable for younger visitors. Rather than learning only from a handout, children will be able to interact with firefighters and participate in hands-on experiences.
The event also offers families a chance to become more familiar with their local fire department before an emergency occurs. Meeting firefighters in a welcoming environment can help children understand that the firefighters, protective equipment and emergency vehicles that may appear frightening during a crisis are there to help them.
Parents and caregivers can use the visit as an opportunity to begin conversations at home about smoke alarms, escape plans, emergency calls and the safe use of rechargeable devices.
The Fire Prevention Open House is part of the department’s continuing effort to make safety education accessible to the entire Mason City community.
