HOUSTON, TEXAS — UNI Panther volleyball found its offensive rhythm Saturday afternoon, pounding out 50 kills and hitting a season-best .310 as Northern Iowa swept Rice in straight sets for its first true road victory of the 2026 season.
The Panthers defeated the Owls 25-18, 25-20 and 25-23 at Tudor Fieldhouse during their second match of the Rice Invitational.
Lily Dykstra powered the UNI attack with a match-high 20 kills while hitting a season-best .409. She added 10 digs to complete her fourth career double-double and second of the season.
The victory provided an immediate response after UNI pushed No. 15 Creighton before falling in four sets Friday to open tournament play in Houston.
Northern Iowa controlled Saturday’s opening set from the start.
The Panthers blasted 17 kills while hitting .325 in the first frame, with Dykstra accounting for seven terminations. Isabelle Elliott and Maryn Bixby each contributed a block as UNI rolled to a 25-18 victory.
The offense became even more efficient in the second set.
UNI hit .375 with 16 kills and committed only one attack error.
Dykstra added another seven kills, while Cassidy Hartman, Bixby and Grace Hannam helped strengthen the Panthers’ blocking defense. Taryn Rice also delivered a service ace as Northern Iowa claimed the second set 25-20.
Rice finally pushed UNI deep into a set during the third.
The Owls used a 6-0 scoring run to take control before Northern Iowa gradually erased the deficit.
Dykstra tied the score at 20-20, and the Panthers’ defense took over late.
Hannam and Elliott combined for blocks on the final two points of the match, shutting down Rice’s comeback bid and giving UNI a 25-23 victory to complete the sweep.
Dykstra’s 20-kill performance marked the seventh time in her career she has reached that number and the third time she has done it this season.
Elliott finished with nine kills and four blocks.
Bixby added eight kills and five blocks, including a career-best three solo blocks.
Hartman recorded eight kills and 13 digs. Her performance also continued a climb through UNI’s record book after she recently surpassed 1,000 career kills during a five-set battle at South Dakota.
Hartman moved into 27th place on Northern Iowa’s all-time kills list Saturday with her 1,034th career termination, passing Shari Vermeer.
Hannam collected five blocks, while Jadyn Petersen led UNI with 16 digs.
Setter Reese Booth finished with 35 assists and 13 digs for her 18th career double-double and sixth of the season.
Booth also moved into 13th place on UNI’s career assists list with 1,577, passing Erin Hirsch.
The Panthers have now recorded at least seven blocks in every match this season and have reached double-digit blocks four times.
Northern Iowa also improved to 6-0 all-time against Rice.
The result continued UNI’s recent dominance of the Owls. The Panthers also swept Rice in three sets during their 2025 meeting.
Now comes the biggest test of the weekend.
UNI will face No. 5 Louisville at noon Sunday in the final match of the Rice Invitational at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Panthers are familiar with the Cardinals. UNI battled then-No. 4 Louisville in four sets during the 2025 season.
Sunday’s match will be available on ESPN+, the Panther Sports Radio Network, 106.5 Corn Country, 93.5 HD-2 and the Varsity app.
