AMES — Iowa State Cyclone football unleashed a torrent of long touchdowns and special-teams fireworks Saturday afternoon, hammering Bowling Green 55-7 at Jack Trice Stadium behind a historic all-around performance from Aiden Flora.
Flora rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns, returned a punt 66 yards for another score and finished with 296 all-purpose yards as Iowa State improved to 2-1. Bowling Green fell to 0-3.
The September 19 rout allowed the Cyclones to recover emphatically after Iowa defeated Iowa State 16-13 on a last-second field goal in the Cy-Hawk rivalry game one week earlier.
A crowd of 50,395 watched Iowa State pile up 507 yards, including 365 on the ground, while holding Bowling Green to 186 total yards.
Five of the Cyclones’ seven touchdowns covered at least 30 yards.
Cyclones answer immediately
Iowa State opened the scoring when Jaylen Raynor connected with Jamal Polite Jr. for a 34-yard touchdown with 5:28 remaining in the first quarter. The catch was Polite’s first career touchdown.
Bowling Green answered less than two minutes later as Jay Kastantin found Winn Sharp for a 59-yard score, tying the game at 7-7.
The tie lasted only 13 seconds.
Cameron Pettaway caught the ensuing kickoff at the goal line and raced 100 yards for a touchdown, tying the NCAA record for the longest possible play and giving Iowa State a 14-7 advantage.
It was the second 100-yard play in Iowa State history, joining Dick Howard’s 100-yard interception return against Kansas State in 1945. Pettaway became the first Cyclone to return a kickoff for a touchdown since Kene Nwangwu accomplished the feat against West Virginia in 2016.
Flora then exploded through the Bowling Green defense for a 61-yard touchdown run with 19 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
In a span of just more than five minutes, the game had gone from scoreless to a 21-7 Iowa State lead.
Flora runs wild
The Cyclones continued pounding Bowling Green on the ground during the second quarter.
Arnold Barnes III finished a five-play, 56-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run, his first score as a Cyclone.
Flora struck again four minutes later, racing 42 yards into the end zone to give Iowa State a commanding 35-7 halftime advantage.
He finished with 194 yards on only 12 carries, averaging 16.2 yards per attempt. His 61-yard and 42-yard touchdown runs accounted for 103 yards on just two carries.
Flora entered the game with 245 career rushing yards before nearly matching that total in a single afternoon.
His biggest achievement came through the combination of his rushing and return production. Flora became the first player in Big 12 history — and only the fourth major-conference player since 1995 — to record two rushing touchdowns, a punt-return touchdown and at least 275 all-purpose yards in one game.
His 296 all-purpose yards rank seventh in Iowa State history.
Special teams make history
Kyle Konrardy opened the second-half scoring with a 39-yard field goal, extending Iowa State’s lead to 38-7.
Just over a minute later, Flora fielded a Bowling Green punt and tore through the coverage unit for a 66-yard touchdown.
It was Flora’s second career punt-return touchdown and gave Iowa State a kickoff-return touchdown and punt-return touchdown in the same game for the first time in program history.
The Cyclones became only the eighth team in Big 12 history to accomplish the feat and the first Power Conference team to do it since Oregon in September 2024.
Iowa State has now produced multiple non-offensive touchdowns in a game 19 times, but Saturday marked the first such performance since a 2017 victory over Northern Iowa.
Barnes adds two touchdowns
Barnes added his second touchdown on an eight-yard run with 8:27 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The running back entered Saturday with 17 rushing yards in his first two games as a Cyclone. He finished against Bowling Green with 63 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.
Konrardy completed the scoring with a 40-yard field goal, producing the 55-7 final margin. He made seven extra points and two field goals after missing a 54-yard attempt on Iowa State’s opening possession.
Konrardy has now connected on 17 consecutive field-goal attempts from inside 45 yards.
Raynor helps Cyclones control game
Raynor completed 11 of 17 passes for 133 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed six times for 60 yards, including a 35-yard run that was briefly Iowa State’s longest rushing play of the season before Flora broke loose.
The quarterback has thrown a touchdown pass in five consecutive games, matching the longest streak of his career.
Raynor now has 22 victories as a starting quarterback, the most among Big 12 quarterbacks and tied for the second-most among active Football Bowl Subdivision players.
Iowa State’s season began with a 38-10 victory over Southeast Missouri in Jimmy Rogers’ Cyclone coaching debut. Rogers is now 2-1 at Iowa State and 35-10 overall as a head coach.
Defense smothers Bowling Green
Bowling Green managed only 10 first downs, 90 rushing yards and 96 passing yards.
The Falcons’ lone touchdown accounted for 59 of their 186 total yards. Outside that scoring play, Bowling Green gained only 127 yards.
Iowa State forced two turnovers. Jack Janikowski stripped Kastantin, and Sullivan Schlimgen recovered the fumble. Beau Goodwin intercepted Kastantin in the second quarter for the first interception of Goodwin’s career.
Carson Willich led Iowa State with six tackles, giving him at least six stops in each of the Cyclones’ first three games. Schlimgen added five tackles and the fumble recovery.
Iowa State held its third consecutive opponent below 100 rushing yards to begin the season. Counting the final game of 2025, the Cyclones have kept four straight opponents under 100 yards on the ground for the first time since 2021.
The Cyclones have now rushed for at least 100 yards in 20 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the Big 12. Their 365 rushing yards Saturday were the program’s most since Iowa State ran for 368 against Texas Tech in 2011.
Iowa State also improved to 3-0 all-time against Bowling Green and extended its streak of home games with at least 50,000 fans to 93.
