MASON CITY — A feisty local woman’s encounters with the law are piling up this year with numerous accusations involving substances and assaults, culminating in her latest drunk driving arrest in a post-midnight traffic stop.
Joanna Lynn Bailie, 47, was arrested after Mason City police were called at approximately 12:45 a.m. September 14 to 2301 Fourth Street SW for a report of an intoxicated driver.
What followed was Bailie’s third alcohol-related criminal case of 2026 — along with enough additional drug and interference allegations to keep her busy in court for months.
Police accused Bailie of:
- Operating while intoxicated, first offense
- Possession of a controlled substance
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- Open container as a driver
- Interference with official acts without injury or damage
Bailie (pictured at top) posted surety bond September 15 and was released from custody. A public defender was appointed to represent her, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for September 24.
The bottle keeps finding its way into the story
Bailie’s latest arrest is hardly her first alcohol-related scrape of the year.
Her first came after a February 6 incident that resulted in a public-intoxication charge. Bailie pleaded guilty the following day and was fined $200. Court costs and a surcharge brought the total to $290, which records show has been paid.
Apparently that encounter was not enough to keep her away from more boozy trouble.
Bailie was charged with public intoxication again following a July 16 incident. That case remains unresolved, with a non-jury trial scheduled for January 19, 2027.
Then came the September 14 intoxicated-driver call, producing the new OWI, open-container, drug and interference allegations.

Two assault convictions entered this year
Bailie’s busy year in court has involved more than alleged drinking and drug violations.
A September 22, 2025, incident in Cerro Gordo County initially brought a serious-misdemeanor charge of domestic abuse assault causing injury or mental illness.
Bailie ultimately pleaded guilty April 21, 2026, to the reduced charge of general assault, a simple misdemeanor. She was sentenced to two days in jail and fined $105. Court records show she paid $319.20 in fines, costs and surcharges.
Another alleged domestic assault followed March 23 in Floyd County.
Bailie was again originally charged with domestic abuse assault causing injury or mental illness. She later entered a negotiated guilty plea to the reduced charge of general assault, a simple misdemeanor, with the disposition entered in August.
Marijuana case remains unresolved
Bailie is also facing a separate Cerro Gordo County charge of possession of marijuana, first offense.
That prosecution was filed in July and remains unresolved.
The marijuana case is separate from the controlled-substance and drug-paraphernalia charges stemming from the September 14 intoxicated-driver call.
Bailie has been convicted in the February public-intoxication case and the two assault cases. The new OWI and drug charges, the July public-intoxication charge and the separate marijuana charge remain allegations. She is presumed innocent of the unresolved charges unless proven guilty in court.
