IOWA CITY — Three running backs eclipsed 100 yards as No. 18 Iowa overwhelmed Northern Iowa from the opening kickoff Saturday, rolling to a 55-0 victory at Kinnick Stadium.
The Hawkeyes scored touchdowns on their first five possessions, built a 42-point halftime lead and finished with 640 yards of offense. Iowa rushed for 422 yards — its most during the Kirk Ferentz era — while holding the Panthers to 155 total yards.
Iowa improved to 3-0, while UNI fell to 1-2.
Hawkeyes take control immediately
Nathan McNeil opened the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run less than four minutes into the game.
Quarterback Hank Brown then connected with Braeden Jackson for a 24-yard touchdown before Xavier Williams broke loose for a 48-yard score, giving Iowa a 21-0 advantage before the end of the first quarter.
The onslaught continued after Jacob Wallace recorded his first career interception. Brown capitalized with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Addison Ostrenga.
Williams added a 16-yard touchdown run, and McNeil scored from 12 yards out with 46 seconds remaining in the half. Iowa entered the locker room with a 42-0 lead and 418 yards of offense.
It was Iowa’s first 42-point opening half since 2005.
Three Hawkeye running backs top 100 yards
Iowa became the first Hawkeye team since 1983 to have three players rush for at least 100 yards in the same game.
Williams led the group with 151 yards and three touchdowns on only six carries. He needed just four attempts to cross the 100-yard mark and averaged 25.2 yards per carry.
Jackson rushed 11 times for 125 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. He also caught the first-quarter touchdown pass from Brown.
McNeil recorded 111 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. He added three receptions for 37 yards.
Williams completed his three-touchdown performance with a 37-yard run midway through the third quarter. Jackson’s 62-yard score produced the final points, although UNI’s Jaylen Pettus blocked the extra-point attempt.
The 422 rushing yards rank seventh in Iowa program history.
Brown delivers perfect performance
Brown completed all 12 of his passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns. He became only the second Iowa quarterback to finish a game with a perfect completion percentage, joining Brad Banks, who went 10-for-10 against Northwestern in 2002.
Jeremy Hecklinski completed six of 11 attempts for 65 yards as Iowa finished 18-for-23 through the air.
Brown’s efficient performance came one week after the Hawkeyes defeated Iowa State 16-13 on a last-second field goal.
Ferentz said after Saturday’s game that Brown will remain Iowa’s starting quarterback.
“Tough to do much better than what he did,” Ferentz said.
Panthers unable to establish offense
UNI produced occasional gains during its opening possessions, including Jaxon Dailey completions of 19 yards to Brady McCullough and 28 yards to Ayden Price. The Panthers, however, could not sustain their drives or reach the end zone.
Dailey completed 11 passes for 91 yards. Price led UNI with 32 receiving yards on two catches, while Caleb Kamara carried seven times for a team-high 21 rushing yards.
The Panthers finished with nine first downs, 53 rushing yards and 102 passing yards. Iowa’s defense also forced two turnovers, with Wallace and Rashad Godfrey Jr. recording their first career interceptions.
Calvin Jaworski led UNI defensively with a career-high 10 solo tackles. Kolben Miller recorded a sack, and Pettus’ blocked extra point was UNI’s second blocked PAT of the season.
The loss followed UNI’s 56-point victory over Drake. The Panthers had also fallen to Eastern Washington in their season opener.
Saturday marked UNI’s first shutout loss since a 17-0 defeat against James Madison in the 2019 FCS playoffs. Its previous regular-season shutout came against Iowa State in 2010.
The Panthers are now 1-18 all-time against the Hawkeyes.
Iowa defense records another shutout
Iowa has shut out two of its first three opponents. The Hawkeyes also blanked Northern Illinois 40-0 in their season opener.
It is Iowa’s first season with multiple shutouts since 2022 and the 20th shutout of the Ferentz era.
The 55-point margin was Iowa’s largest since its 63-0 victory over Illinois in 2018.

Iowa begins Big Ten play on the road against Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Central time.
