MASON CITY — Lowell L. Butler, 88, of Mason City, died September 19, 2026, surrounded by family at Terrace Glen Village in Marion. His grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s latest adventures were among his greatest pleasures.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Friday, September 25, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may benefit the Parkinson’s Foundation.
Born February 24, 1938, to Lloyd and Alice Butler, Lowell built a career as a teacher, basketball coach, counselor and principal. He later joined his father and brother in the business that became Butler Oil, then worked in human resources.
He married Ellamae Oswald in 1960. After retirement, they returned to Mason City to help care for their parents.
A Trinity Lutheran member, Lowell enjoyed friendships, Hawkeyes and Packers games, and watching Jeff Gordon race. He leaves Ellamae, children Perry and Jan, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
