FENTON — Janean Ann Bierstedt, 83, died Sunday, September 20, 2026, at Algona Manor in Algona.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 23, at Fenton United Methodist Cemetery. Visitation followed from noon to 2 p.m. at the Fenton American Legion Building.
Janean was born October 24, 1942, on the family farm near Fenton to Raymond and Lola (Frye) Zwiefel. She grew up alongside her brothers Kenley, Jerome, Daryle and Joel in a rural home shaped by family, faith and the rhythms of farm life.
Those Northern Iowa roots remained an important part of Janean’s life.
Among the projects for which she became known locally was her work preserving the stories of Fenton-area military veterans. Janean researched and wrote a book documenting military personnel from the Fenton community, helping ensure that the service and sacrifices of local men and women would not be forgotten.
Her knowledge of that history also took her beyond the pages of the book.
Janean was invited to speak at area Memorial Day observances, sharing the stories she had gathered about Fenton veterans and the generations of local families touched by military service.
Her work reflected not only an interest in history, but a deep appreciation for the people and community that surrounded her throughout her life.
Janean’s story began on a Northern Iowa farm, and the Fenton community remained woven through her life for more than eight decades.
Family, friends and members of the community gathered to remember Janean and the many connections she made during her 83 years.
