IOWA CITY — Two days after Indiana handed Iowa field hockey its first loss of the season, the Hawkeyes got another shot at the Hoosiers. This time, Dionne van Aalsum delivered the winner in a shootout, giving Iowa a 2-1 nonconference victory Sunday at Grant Field.
The rematch followed Indiana’s 3-1 win over Iowa in Friday’s Big Ten opener. Sunday’s game stayed scoreless through three quarters before Tea Fortpied put the Hawkeyes ahead on a penalty corner with 6:35 left in regulation. Rachel Herbine and Amber Millard-Smith assisted.
Indiana pulled its goalkeeper and tied the game with 2:04 remaining when Theresa Ricci scored off a pass from Molly Stutte. Neither team scored in overtime.
Iowa converted its first three shootout attempts, but Indiana answered each one. In sudden death, Hawkeye goalkeeper Abby Johnson stopped Mijntje Hagen, and van Aalsum converted her second attempt to give Iowa the shootout 4-3.
Julia Claessens made two saves during regulation and overtime before Johnson entered for the shootout. The win was a quick response for a Hawkeye team that had beaten No. 14 Louisville the previous weekend.
