MASON CITY – Cerro Gordo sheriff Kevin Pals warned today of scammers calling the elderly.

The sheriff’s office received information from the Cerro Gordo County Assessor’s Office of scam calls, sheriff Kevin Pals said today.

There have been reports of scam calls targeting the 65+ population with the hopes of getting personal information, saying that they are from the County Assessor’s office and want to help them get signed up for the new homestead exemption. The assessor’s office is not initiating calls to sign up people.

“We wait for homeowners to contact us to fill out the form. The only personal information that we need is birthdates,” Sheriff pals said via Decira Harris of the Cerro Gordo Assessor’s Office.

Sheriff Pals advised anyone who gets a call and the caller asks for personal details like a social security number, to contact their local law enforcement.
