CHARLES CITY – A Charles City woman, days away from her second drunk driving conviction and a sweet plea deal from a judge, was stopped by police allegedly while intoxicated, driving again with children in her car, and wouldn’t go quietly.

Charles City police say the incident took place on July 7, 2023. At 10:37 AM that morning, police took a report of a possibly intoxicated driver in the 1000 block of Freeman Street. Officers located the vehicle and after an investigation, determined the driver, 25-year-old Cassandra Martinez of Charles City, was wanted on a warrant for public intoxication. Apparently during the investigation, officers determined Martinez was with children and operating while intoxicated, had a revoked driver’s license, and no insurance. Martinez then allegedly interfered with the officers and was charged with assault.

Martinez was jailed on charges of drunk driving, child endangerment, driving while revoked, and assault. She was conditionally released and awaits further court proceedings.

Martinez was stopped in Chickasaw county for operating while intoxicated second offense on May 28, 2023. In court this month, on July 12, judge John Sullivan accepted a plea deal in which charges of assault and child endangerment were dropped and jail was suspended. She owes the court $2,256.25 in fines, fees and costs, along with a year of probation.

Martinez was arrested in Charles City and guilty of drunk driving first offense in 2018; it cost her $2,778.44.
