MASON CITY — A Northern Iowa woman was arrested early July 4 after police say her alleged impaired driving caused a destructive crash that tore the rear bumper off another vehicle in Mason City.
The collision was reported at 2:42 a.m. on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at 12th Street Northeast and North Carolina Avenue.
According to Mason City Police Chief Mike McKelvey, Michelle Collings of Rudd was driving a 2009 Chrysler Town and Country minivan eastbound on 12th Street Northeast. Desiree Sachen of Manly was driving westbound in a 2003 Ford Mustang near the intersection.
Police say Sachen (pictured at top) allegedly turned left, heading south, before yielding to Collings’ eastbound minivan. The vehicles collided, and the impact completely tore the rear bumper off Collings’ van.
No injuries were reported.
Sachen was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated, first offense; failure to yield upon left turn; and failure to provide proof of financial responsibility.
A damage estimate was not immediately available.
Sachen is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
