MASON CITY – A house fire at 1645 8th Street SW was reported to the Mason City Fire Department early Saturday evening.

The residents, Jeremy and Sarah Clemens, were not home.

“Their son had left and they had just left to go out to dinner,” said neighbors from across the street, Shirley and Bill Stoyles.

The fire was out, but “apparently it had started in the southwest side of the house,” said a Mason City Police officer at the scene.

Shirley went on to explain, “Their neighbor, a couple houses down, heard glass breaking and went to check it out. He saw the flames and called 911. He also moved their van out of the driveway.”

The neighbors already have plans to have a benefit for the Clemens’ in a few days.

“We believe God wants us to watch out for each other,” said the Stoyles’.  “The neighbors will all get together and bring gifts and snacks. Try to replace some of their damaged property. I’m sure they lost almost everything to smoke damage. She takes care of kids during the day, so it also took their business, but they’ll figure out something. Everyone is invited to participate,” said Shirley.
