PLYMOUTH – A Mason City man was arrested after authorities say he crashed a motorcycle in Plymouth and was later charged with drunken driving and marijuana possession.

According to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at about 12:39 a.m. on May 31, 2026, to the intersection of Main Street East and Rock Street in Plymouth for a report of a motorcycle crash with injuries.

Authorities said 50-year-old Michael Gene Schmitz of Mason City was operating a yellow 2011 Harley-Davidson FXDWG motorcycle eastbound on Main Street East when he attempted to turn north onto Rock Street and lost control.

The motorcycle crashed onto the pavement and went off the roadway onto a curb lawn, according to the sheriff’s office.

Schmitz (pictured at top) was treated at the scene by the Mason City Fire Department and Plymouth Fire Department for non-incapacitating injuries. He was later taken to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center for further treatment and was released.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office said Schmitz was then placed under arrest and charged with operating while under the influence, first offense; possession of controlled substance marijuana, first offense; failure to maintain control; and failure to provide proof of financial liability.

The crash remains listed under Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office case number CG2600510.

The Mason City Fire Department and Plymouth Fire Department assisted at the scene.

An arrest without disposition is not an indication of guilt. Citizens with information about a crime are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-383-0088. Rewards may be available.
