MUSCATINE — Seven people are dead after an Iowa mass shooting that police say appears to have stemmed from a domestic dispute.
According to the Muscatine Police Department, emergency dispatchers received a report of a shooting at about 12:12 p.m. on Monday, June 1, 2026, at 210 Park Avenue in Muscatine.
Police officers and emergency medical personnel were sent to the scene immediately.
When officers arrived, they found four victims inside the residence. All four had suffered gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the suspected shooter had left before law enforcement arrived, but he was quickly identified as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland of Muscatine.
Officers located McFarland on the Riverfront Trail near the pedestrian bridge. Police said he had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers and EMS personnel rendered aid, but McFarland was pronounced dead at the scene.
As the investigation continued, police developed information that there may be additional victims.
Officers then found an adult male dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside a residence at 1509 Mill Street.
Police later responded to a business at 808 Grandview Avenue, where they found another adult male dead from an apparent gunshot wound.
The preliminary investigation indicates the shootings stemmed from a domestic dispute. At this time, police said all victims are believed to be family members of the deceased suspect.
The Muscatine Police Department is being assisted by the Muscatine Fire Department, the Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. Detectives continue to process the crime scenes and conduct witness interviews.
