MASON CITY — Rosie Esmeralda LaVallee, 82, of Mason City, a multilingual educator and longtime translator who helped build MercyOne North Iowa’s interpretation program, died peacefully Monday, August 24, 2026, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 31, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with Pastor Nick Daugherty officiating. Visitation will be held from noon until 2 p.m. at the funeral home immediately before the service.
Inurnment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Rosie’s family.
Born Rocio Esmeralda Reyes Ruiz on June 4, 1944, in Mexico City, Mexico, Rosie was the eldest of five children born to Jose Ruben Reyes Aguilar and Julieta Elisa Ruiz Galvan.
Learning became an important part of her life at an early age. Rosie attended Catholic school and, in addition to her native Spanish, learned French, English and German. Her curiosity and love of education continued throughout her life.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in education and, many years later, continued pursuing knowledge through the Lifelong Learners program at North Iowa Area Community College.
Rosie met Robert M. LaVallee while traveling in California. They married April 25, 1970, and had two children, Robert S. and Yvette. The family moved to Waterloo in 1980 and later made Mason City their home in 1994.
Rosie and Bob shared 38 years of marriage before his death in January 2008.
Rosie worked during her life as an educator and in the insurance industry, but much of her professional career was devoted to helping people communicate.
She became an important early figure in MercyOne North Iowa’s interpretation program and spent more than two decades working as a translator while helping improve and expand interpretation services.
Her work allowed her to use her language skills to help patients and families navigate situations in which clear communication could make an enormous difference.
Rosie also had a creative side. She enjoyed arranging flowers for others, writing poetry and stories, and creating colorful bulletin boards and floats.
Faith remained a foundation throughout her life. Those close to Rosie knew her as a woman who was firm in what she believed and willing to stand up for people and causes important to her. Though small in stature, she possessed a determined personality and was rarely afraid to make her position known.
She also enjoyed humor and a little mischief. Rosie appreciated a good prank and a clever remark, and her family lovingly remembered that cooking and driving were not necessarily among her strongest talents — although that never prevented her from experimenting in the kitchen or getting behind the wheel.
Her great-granddaughters, Piper and Kensley, knew her as “Little Grandma” and remembered a loving and generous woman who could entertain them with stories while paging through family photo albums.
Shopping trips could turn into adventures of their own, and Rosie treasured time spent with the younger generations of her family.
Through difficult times, Rosie maintained an optimistic outlook and a strong sense of hope. She wanted her life to be remembered for that hope and for the love she gave to others.
Rosie is survived by her son, Robert S. LaVallee and his wife, Anna; daughter, Yvette LaVallee; granddaughter, Megan Lipp and her husband, Ben; great-granddaughters Piper and Kensley; siblings Mireya del Carmen Reyes Ruiz, Patricia Reyes Ruiz, Armando Arturo Reyes Ruiz and Liselott Aida Reyes Ruiz; nephew Miguel Angel Roblero; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. LaVallee, and her parents, Jose Ruben Reyes Aguilar and Julieta Elisa Ruiz Galvan.
