Alcohol compliance police sting in Ames reveals most businesses failed; employees dinged with fines

What a shock that booze is easy to get in a college town.

AMES – An alcohol compliance police sting in Ames revealed most business failed, and wage-earning employees were dinged with fines.

The Ames Police Department in collaboration with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division (ABD) conducted alcohol compliance checks of local licensed liquor establishments on February 11, 2022. Five establishments were checked. Four establishments sold alcohol to an underage person. The employees were cited for selling alcohol to an underage person reference Iowa Code Section 123.49(2)(H).

The total fine for this violation, including the surcharge and court costs, is $796.75. The business locations that failed the compliance check are listed below:

• El Maguey, 217 S. Duff Ave.
• La Casa Maya, 631 Lincoln Way
• Neighborhood Liquor Mart, 3505 Lincoln Way # 105
• AJ’s Liquor, 2515 Chamberlain St.
One business passed the compliance check and is listed below:
• Kwik Stop, 125 6th St.

The Ames Police Department will continue to work with the Alcoholic Beverages Division to complete additional checks of businesses in the near future.
