BEAMAN — Douglas J. “Doug” Martin, 61, of Beaman, a longtime truck driver with deep Mason City and North Iowa ties, died Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.
A memorial service and time for sharing memories will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 11, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third Street NE in Mason City. Doug’s family will greet friends and relatives from 9:30 a.m. until the service begins. In keeping with Doug’s straightforward personality, the family is encouraging those attending to dress casually and simply come as they are.
Douglas James Martin was born April 12, 1965, to Marty D. Martin and Judith Ann “Judy” Sido Morphew. He spent his earliest years in Dows before his family moved to Mason City in 1968. He later earned his GED and worked in several trades, including jobs with Central Lock and Wilbert Vault Company.
Doug eventually found the occupation that suited him best — driving truck.
He spent many years behind the wheel, including a long stretch with Norseman Trucking and, more recently, Green Products. Driving was much more than a paycheck for Doug. He enjoyed the road and was known for helping and encouraging others who wanted to earn their commercial driver’s license and enter the trucking profession.
Doug had a strong personality and generally knew exactly how he wanted things done. Family and friends knew him as stubborn and particular at times, but behind that tough exterior was a generous man who would readily help someone who needed him.
During his younger years, Doug enjoyed motorcycles and took pride in keeping his bike in top shape. He also enjoyed working with his uncle Al Eggena, including many hours spent together working on a Chevelle and simply taking drives.
Doug found pleasure in familiar everyday things, including Diet Coke, watching SpongeBob SquarePants and settling in for an afternoon nap. His family also remembers that his hands were rarely still, as he frequently fidgeted with a rubber band or whatever else happened to be nearby.
Above all, Doug cherished his children and grandchildren. Family members said they brought out a particularly tender side of the lifelong trucker.
Doug is survived by his children, Jason Martin; Josh “Joe” Martin and his wife, Chi “Mama Chi,” of Mason City; and Sunni “Pookie” Martin and Bryce “Brycer” Edmondson of Waterloo; grandchildren Angel and Orion Martin and Justice and Ryker Martin; his father, Marty Martin and Dawn Finley of Northwood; uncle and aunt Al and Sue Eggena; stepfather Keith Morphew; brother-in-law Raymond McCoy; nephews Jeremy Tollefson and Taylor McCoy; half-sisters Tonya Carlisle and Toni Lewis; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Judy Morphew; sister, Connie McCoy; maternal grandparents Irene and Albert Eggena; paternal grandparents Cecil and Mildred Martin; and other family members.
