MASON CITY – A Mason City couple was hospitalized Sunday after the brakes on their trailer locked up and sent them into a ditch.
Deputies and other emergency responders out of Cerro Gordo county responded to the area of Highway 65 and county road B-15 between Mason City and Manly at about 2:30 PM.
At the scene, a pick-up truck with a trailer that apparently held a skid loader and a few other items were scattered in the ditch. Law enforcement said that the brakes on the trailer had locked up as it was being pulled, southbound, by a 2008 Ford F-350, driven by 61-year-old Michael Beland, causing him to lose control. The vehicle and trailer then rolled into the ditch. Beland and 50-year-old Joleen Cornelius-Beland were injured and taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital. Both were extracted by jaws of life from the pickup truck.
The extent of the injuries to the couple was not released.
