WEST POINT, N.Y. — Iowa volleyball completed a perfect opening weekend Sunday morning, sweeping Sacred Heart in straight sets to win the Black Knight Invitational at Christl Arena.
The Hawkeyes dispatched the Pioneers 25-20, 25-20 and 25-19, improving to 3-0 for the second consecutive season while winning their season-opening tournament for the second year in a row.
Iowa entered Sunday after defeating UAlbany in four sets Saturday as head coach Jim Barnes earned his 500th career victory. The Hawkeyes had opened the season Friday with a straight-set sweep of Army.
Fifth-year middle Liv Mogridge led Iowa against Sacred Heart with 12 kills on 19 attacks while also dominating at the net with eight blocks.
Carmel Vares delivered 11 kills while hitting .417, and Ksenija Tomic added eight kills and eight digs.
Hallie Steponaitis finished with six kills, while setter Jenna Meitzler filled the stat sheet with 36 assists, five blocks, three digs and three kills.
Libero Jaimie Marquardt anchored the back row with a match-high 16 digs.
Iowa’s biggest advantage came at the net.
The Hawkeyes piled up 14 blocks across the three sets, with Mogridge collecting eight and Hannah Whittingstall adding six.
Iowa finished the match hitting .304 with 44 kills and only 10 attacking errors. Sacred Heart was limited to a .132 hitting percentage, recording 33 kills against 19 errors.
The Hawkeyes grabbed the opening set despite Sacred Heart briefly taking control with an early 4-0 run.
Tomic helped erase the deficit with consecutive kills, and Iowa began pulling away midway through the frame. A block from Mogridge and Steponaitis helped build the advantage before Tomic added another block and kill to push Iowa ahead 17-13.
Marquardt later fired an ace to make it 24-18 before Vares closed the set with a kill for a 25-20 Iowa victory.
The Hawkeyes took command much earlier in the second set.
A 5-0 Iowa run capped by a Mogridge kill produced a 6-2 advantage. Steponaitis and Whittingstall added kills before consecutive Steponaitis service aces helped Iowa stretch the margin to 13-5.
Sacred Heart made a late push, but Mogridge delivered her fifth kill of the set to finish another 25-20 Hawkeye win.
Iowa jumped ahead 3-0 in the third behind a Vares kill, a Marquardt ace and a Mogridge-Vares block.
The Pioneers battled back to within a point at 9-8 and remained close through the middle of the set, but Iowa’s blocking eventually overwhelmed Sacred Heart.
Tomic, Mogridge and Steponaitis teamed up for consecutive blocks down the stretch, and another block from Whittingstall and Vares pushed Iowa ahead 23-18.
A Sacred Heart service error eventually sealed the 25-19 set and the tournament championship.
Steponaitis was named Black Knight Invitational MVP after finishing the weekend with 27 kills while hitting .471. She also contributed eight blocks, seven digs and four service aces.
Mogridge and Whittingstall joined her on the all-tournament team.
Mogridge finished the three-match weekend hitting .443 with 33 kills and 13 blocks.
Whittingstall was even more efficient, recording 25 kills while committing only one attack error and hitting .511 for the tournament.
Iowa also saw Henlee Moszkowicz make her first collegiate start Sunday, while Greta Schlichter made her season debut.
The Hawkeyes now head south for their first major test of the season.
Iowa will face Mississippi State in Starkville on Thursday in its opening match of the 2026 Allstate Big Ten/SEC Volleyball Challenge.
