AMES — Iowa State erupted for five goals from five different players Sunday night, overwhelming Northern Iowa 5-0 at the Cyclone Sports Complex and handing the struggling Panthers another lopsided defeat.
The Cyclones entered the match having gone scoreless in their previous three outings, but that drought ended decisively against UNI.
Iowa State improved to 3-2-1 on the season while Northern Iowa fell to 0-5-1.
The Cyclones broke through in the 20th minute after drawing a foul inside the box. Sophie Forrester stepped to the penalty spot and converted Iowa State’s first penalty kick of the season to give ISU a 1-0 lead.
Iowa State kept the pressure on and doubled its advantage in the 30th minute when Alaina Villa scored the first goal of her collegiate career off a feed from Allison Charleston.
Villa’s goal carried additional significance after she missed most of the 2025 season because of a knee injury.
Just over seven minutes later, Ava Hancock joined her in the first-goal club.
Hancock scored in the 38th minute with assists credited to Mia Sowders and Morgan Goodman, putting Iowa State ahead 3-0 heading into halftime.
The first-half statistics reflected how thoroughly the Cyclones controlled the match.
Iowa State held an 18-4 advantage in shots through the opening 45 minutes and also led 2-1 in corner kicks. UNI goalkeeper Hailey Luedtke was forced to make five first-half saves.
The Panthers entered the match coming off a small but encouraging breakthrough.
As NorthIowaToday.com reported Friday, UNI had finally scored its first goal of the season and snapped a nine-match losing streak with a 1-1 draw against St. Ambrose.
Freshman Abi Roberts scored that breakthrough goal for Northern Iowa.
That momentum did not carry into Ames.
Iowa State added its fourth goal in the 63rd minute after Megan Walters broke free and took a pass from Sara Gavagan. Walters beat UNI goalkeeper Poppy Anderson to stretch the advantage to 4-0.
Izabella Tejeda finished the scoring in the 81st minute.
Tejeda took a pass from Sowders and sent the ball toward the back post for her first career goal, making her the third Cyclone of the night — along with Villa and Hancock — to score for the first time in her collegiate career.
Sowders finished with two assists.
Iowa State ended the night with 31 shots, its highest total of the season and its most since firing 31 shots in a 6-1 victory over UNI in 2024.
The Cyclones held UNI to eight shots and dominated corner kicks 8-1.
Forrester led Iowa State with seven shot attempts, including three on goal, while Tejeda added five shots.
Ella Ubben accounted for half of Northern Iowa’s offensive production, taking four of the Panthers’ eight shots.
Allison Flies was the only UNI player to remain on the field for the entire 90 minutes.
Luedtke and Anderson split time in goal for Northern Iowa, while Iowa State’s Eme McClenahan and Gavagan combined for the shutout.
The victory marked Iowa State’s fourth clean sheet in six matches this season.
UNI’s offensive struggles have been one of the major stories of its young season.
The Panthers opened 2026 with a 4-0 home loss to South Dakota and later generated season-high offensive numbers but still suffered a 3-0 setback at Northern Illinois.
Northern Iowa has now been outscored heavily through its first six matches while still searching for its first victory of 2026.
Iowa State, meanwhile, gets a quick chance to build on Sunday’s offensive explosion.
The Cyclones will close their four-match homestand Thursday, September 3, against Missouri State at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m., with the match available on ESPN+.
