CLEAR LAKE — Judith “Judi” Ann Balek, 79, of Clear Lake, was called home on Saturday, August 29, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Cremation has taken place. Judi’s final resting place will be Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.
Judi was born November 14, 1946, in Wyandotte, Michigan, the daughter of Russell and Gladys (Fitzgerald) Lashbrook. She grew up with her older sister, Patricia, and was raised in Southern California, where she graduated from Monrovia High School in Monrovia, California.
On February 12, 1966, Judi married Mike Balek. Their marriage would span 60 years, and together they raised two daughters, Michelle and Laurie.
Judi was a devoted wife and mother who took an active role in her daughters’ lives and activities. She also gave her time to the High School Band Boosters, helped work on floats for the Pasadena Rose Parade and participated in fundraising efforts for JDRF.
During her working years, Judi was employed by General Telephone Electric Company in California, holding a variety of positions before retiring.
Judi will also be remembered for an adventurous streak that stayed with her throughout her life. She loved experiencing new things and seeing new places, whether that meant swimming with dolphins, ziplining in San Diego and Las Vegas, celebrating Mardi Gras with family or exploring someplace unfamiliar.
One of her most treasured adventures was a trip to Ireland with her daughters.
Even indoor skydiving made Judi’s list of experiences, a fitting example of a woman who was not afraid to try something exciting and make another memory along the way.
Above all, family remained at the center of Judi’s life. She treasured the time spent with the people closest to her and the memories they created together through the years.
Those left to cherish Judi’s memory include her husband of 60 years, Mike Balek; daughters Michelle Woodbury and Laurie (Nate) Benzing; grandchildren Katherine Benzing, Amber Adams, Madison Benzing and Ryan Woodbury; sister Patricia Buchanan; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Judi was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Gladys Lashbrook; her grandparents; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Her family said Judi is now happy, walking freely and enjoying her new surroundings. Her adventurous nature, love of life and devotion to family will remain part of the memories carried forward by those who knew and loved her.
Arrangements are being handled by Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake.
