MASON CITY — A Mason City man was jailed Saturday afternoon after police responded to a disturbance on the city’s southeast side and accused him of interfering with officers and assaulting a person in a protected occupation.
Mason City police were called at 3:17 p.m. August 30 to 1319 South Virginia Avenue for a disorderly disturbance, fight or out-of-control person.
Police arrested 44-year-old David Steven Ziron Jr. at the scene.
Ziron (pictured at top) was charged with assault on persons in certain occupations, no injury, under Iowa Code section 708.3A(4), and interference with official acts with no injury or damage under Iowa Code section 719.1(1)(b).
Court records classify the assault charge as an aggravated misdemeanor.
The initial police, jail and court information does not describe exactly what allegedly happened during the confrontation, who Ziron is accused of assaulting or whether the alleged victim was a police officer or another person covered by Iowa’s protected-occupation assault law.
Ziron was booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail at 4:32 p.m. and initially housed in the intake-detox area.
Jail records list a $2,000 cash or surety bond on the assault charge and an additional $300 cash or surety bond on the interference charge.
The arrest comes amid a string of recent Mason City cases in which encounters with police have allegedly escalated into resistance or other confrontations. Earlier this summer, NorthIowaToday.com reported on a Mason City woman accused of trying to grab an officer’s Taser while resisting arrest.
More recently, another Mason City suspect was accused of jumping from a window and resisting officers who were trying to take him into custody.
A criminal complaint filed by the Mason City Police Department in Ziron’s case was entered into Cerro Gordo County court records following the Saturday arrest.
Ziron appeared before a judge Sunday, August 31, and was held for bond.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. September 10 before a magistrate.
The case remains pending.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation. Ziron is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
