AMES — The UNI volleyball team opened the 2026 season on the wrong side of a sweep Friday, falling 3-0 to Georgia Tech in the opening match of the Cyclone Invitational at Hilton Coliseum.
The Yellow Jackets held off late UNI pushes in the first two sets before pulling away in the third, winning 25-22, 25-21 and 25-17.
Northern Iowa struggled to solve Georgia Tech’s blocking and service pressure, finishing with 30 kills and a .036 team hitting percentage.
The loss snapped UNI’s 19-match regular-season winning streak dating back to last fall. It was the Panthers’ first regular-season defeat since a September 14, 2025 loss at Creighton.
UNI’s most recent match before Friday had also come against Creighton, when the Panthers fell to the nationally ranked Bluejays in the second round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament.
Georgia Tech built an eight-point advantage during Friday’s opening set as UNI struggled early against the Yellow Jackets’ block and sent several attacks long.
The Panthers refused to go quietly.
UNI put together a six-point run late in the set and finished the frame with 14 kills while hitting .108, but Georgia Tech survived the rally for a 25-22 win.
The Yellow Jackets jumped ahead 6-1 in the second set before Northern Iowa again battled back.
UNI’s defense at the net improved considerably, producing five blocks during the frame. The Panthers eventually pulled within a point at 17-16.
Claire Munch and Grace Hannam each recorded the first blocks of their collegiate careers, but UNI managed only seven kills while hitting -.026. Georgia Tech closed out the set 25-21 to take a 2-0 match advantage.
Northern Iowa stayed with the Yellow Jackets early in the third, battling to ties at 6-6 and 7-7.
Georgia Tech eventually took control, limiting UNI to nine kills against eight attack errors and a .029 hitting percentage. The Yellow Jackets finished the sweep with a 25-17 victory.
Lily Dykstra led UNI with 13 kills, marking the 27th time in her career she has recorded at least 10 kills in a match.
Cassidy Hartman finished with nine kills and nine digs and reached another career milestone, recording her 900th kill as a Panther. The reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year is now 99 kills away from becoming the 32nd player in UNI history to reach 1,000 career kills.
Isabelle Elliott added five kills.
Reese Booth distributed 23 assists, while Jadyn Petersen led the Panthers with 12 digs.
Taryn Rice recorded a career-high 11 digs.
Three Panthers made their collegiate debuts Friday. Hannam, Munch and Sophie Buysse saw their first college action, with Hannam and Munch also making their first career starts.
Georgia Tech now leads the all-time series against UNI, 2-1. Friday marked the programs’ first meeting since 2006.
Northern Iowa dropped to 32-21 all-time in season openers and 17-10 in season-opening matches under head coach Bobbi Petersen.
The Panthers will get another opportunity Saturday when they face Loyola Chicago in their second match of the Cyclone Invitational.
